A 35-year-old man who attempted to hang himself from a bridge near McCaig Motel in Talladega Friday afternoon died at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday at University Hospital in Birmingham.

Eyewitnesses reported Thomas Eric Diggs, a Talladega native, tied a rope around his neck before leaping from the bridge. Several people passing stopped to pull Diggs back up to the bridge.

Members of the Talladega Police Department and paramedics on the scene attempted to perform CPR on Diggs before he was transported to Citizens Baptist Medical Center.

Capt. John McCoy said Diggs was later flown to University via helicopter.

Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy confirmed Diggs’ time of death, but said he did not know the severity of his injuries.
