CHILDERSBURG - Directors of the Childersburg Chamber of Commerce didn’t have to look very far to find the organization’s next president and chief executive officer. He was in the room.

Directors voted Tuesday morning to hire the board’s chairman, Robert “Bubba” Cleckler, to succeed Pete Storey in the post. Storey announced his resignation from the job last week, effective Dec. 27. Cleckler will assume his new duties on Jan. 1.

Tammy Freeman, formerly vice chairman, was elevated to chairman of the board.

Cleckler and Freeman announced the changes Tuesday during the chamber’s monthly coffee, held at the Butler Harris Rainwater Museum.

Cleckler moved to Childersburg from Columbiana in 1949, when he was a child. He is a retired financial advisor and banker.

“My first priority will be to maintain the growth and prosperity that my predecessor has started,” Cleckler said. “I want to make it grow and try to anticipate problems and plan ahead to fix problems before they get here.”

He said he wants to see the chamber continue in its role “to support the merchants and do whatever it can to help them. That’s what it’s all about.
