Sammy Dodson, chairman of the Building and Construction Trade Group, right, presents $750 to Earl Lewis, director of The Care House, to support the Sylacauga non-profit that provides food and clothing to needy people in South Talladega County. Dodson’s group, formerly the Birmingham Building Trades Towers Inc., is a non-profit corporation formed in 1967 to provide community services. They built and operated an apartment building providing affordable housing to senior citizens in Birmingham, but since getting out of the apartment business in 2005 have directed their community services in other directions to diversify their impact. The group represents the unionized construction trades in central Alabama. In seven years, the group has given $130,000 in support to local charities in the seven-county area surrounding Birmingham.
