“It was a team effort,” TC Central head coach Damien Dorsey said. “I am proud of the way that they responded. We got a little lackadaisical with the ball at the end. I was kind of worried about it, but I knew the guys were going to respond because they practice hard. I am blessed to get the win, we are happy. We are moving on now to Fayetteville.”
TC Central gained control of the game in the first quarter behind their stingy defense and play of Crystyle Stockdale and Tervarus Garrett.
The TC Central Fighting got off to a fast start in the first quarter. Garrett scored four quick points to give TC a 6-2 lead. The Fighting Tigers took a 9-2 on a pair of Crystyle Stockdale free throws. Juttorius Cook scored four quick points to cut TC lead 13-6. Stockdale scored five straight points including a 3-pointer to make it 18-10 going to the second quarter.
Crystyle Stockdale picked up where he left off in the second quarter. The junior hit three straight 3 pointers to make it 28-15. Garrett hit a jumper off a spin move to make it 30-15. Crystyle Stockdale hit a layup to make 32-17 at halftime.
The Fighting Tigers were able to build their lead up to 20 points in the third quarter. Crystyle Stockdale scored seven points in the quarter including a layup to put TC Central ahead 39-23. Back-to-back layups by Cededrick Garrett gave the Fighting Tigers 45-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Winterboro fought their way back into the game in the final eight minutes. The Bulldogs went on a 17-5 run to cut the lead down to single digits. Tae Graham and Jutturious Cook scored four points apiece early in the quarter to make 47-33. Phillip Cook hit a 3 –pointer to cut the lead to 11 points, 47-36. Dewayne Wallace increased TC Central’s lead to 49-39 on a layup with 2:42 left in the game.
Phillip Cook continued to keep Winterboro close as he drained a deep 3-pointer with 2:32 left in the game to cut the TC Central lead to 49-42. Crystyle Stockdale hit a layup to make it 51-42. With 1:21 remaining in the game, Crystyle Stockdale sealed the victory for TC Central with a layup to push their lead out to 53-44.
“We came in focused knowing that it was a rival game and it was going to be a lot of people here,” Stockdale said. “We came in 2-0 in area play and we can’t overlook anybody especially in a rival game, because anything can happen in a rival game. I feel like tonight we pushed hard and we came out with a win.”
Crystyle Stockdale led TC Central in scoring with 29 points. Tervarus Garrett scored 14 points for the Fighting Tigers.
Juttorius Cook led Winterboro with 23 points. Graham scored 11 points, while Phillip Cook chipped in with 10 points.
Winterboro travels to take on county foe Munford today at 7:30 p.m.
TC hosts Fayetteville on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
