SYLACAUGA – Police responded to two separate violent incidents Thursday night.

One was a fatal shooting at a residence and the other was an armed robbery at Pizza Hut, Chief Chris Carden said in a press release.

The shooting occurred at a residence on the 700 block of South Main Avenue. Police responded to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Friday, where 38-year-old Jermaine Walton had been shot in the head. He was flown to a Birmingham hospital where he died at 10:25 a.m., Carden said.

Witnesses told police Walton and another male were involved in a verbal altercation that turned violent at the household; however, the other male fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. His whereabouts are being investigated “to determine exactly what happened in the home,” Carden said. The incident, he said, is not being considered a homicide at this time.

Earlier in the night, around 11:30 p.m., police responded to an armed robbery at Pizza Hut on West Fort Williams Street where two masked males, one carrying a hand gun, approached and robbed a female employee in the parking lot. The suspects fled toward Spring Street on foot. There were no injuries during the incident.

One of the robbers wore a mask resembling the one from the movie “Scream,” the press release said. No other identifying features of the accused robbers were available.

“Both of these incidents are extremely serious,” Carden said. “Investigators and police worked all night long conducting interviews and processing crime scenes. In the days to come, hopefully we will be able to bring both of these events to a close, giving the victims some peace and preventing future violent crimes. I encourage anyone with information pertaining to either of these crimes to please contact us as soon as possible.”

One other shooting in Sylacauga this year remains an open investigation, Carden said. In a July 8 incident, 32-year-old victim Oliver Jennings was shot and transported to University Hospital in Birmingham. He died Aug. 5, upgrading the crime from first-degree assault to homicide. The incident occurred on the 900 block of Goodwater Highway, less than half a mile down the road from Friday’s shooting.

An investigation into an armed robbery at Discount Food Mart on Oct. 4 also remains ongoing, Carden confirmed. Another armed robbery June 1 at Game Stop on U.S. 280 resulted in an arrest six days later.

Any information about a crime should be reported to Sylacauga Police Department Investigations at 256-401-2450 or to the anonymous tip line at 256-249-4716 or at the non-emergency police line at 256-401-2442.
