A Talladega man is facing felony charges after allegedly trying to burn down his apartment in a failed suicide attempt.

According to Talladega police Capt. Leon Thomas, Andre Winbush Jr., 21, was arrested for arson in the first degree Sunday afternoon. Bond was set at $250,000 by District Judge Jeb Fannin.

Thomas said police were first notified by a third party that Winbush had been sending text messages threatening to commit suicide and to burn down his apartment at Pineview Landing around 2:20 p.m. Sunday. Officers were initially unable to make contact with him, however.

Just over an hour later, police and firefighters responded to an alarm call at Pineview Landing. Firefighters were headed upstairs and were prepared to break down the door when Winbush came out of his apartment, Thomas said.

Inside, firefighters and investigators found three separate fires set using a T-shirt and piles of paper. There was heavy smoke damage throughout the apartment and fire damage to the floor.

Thomas said at least three other apartments in the same building were occupied when Winbush allegedly set the fires in his own apartment.

Arson in the first degree is a Class A felony in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by 10 to 99 years or life in prison.
