TALLADEGA—The 40th Annual Talladega Round Robin tournament began with a thrilling overtime game that saw TC Central pull out a win, 54-52.

“I’m satisfied with the win,” TC Central head coach Damien Dorsey said. “We played a good 4A team, so that’s a measuring stick for us because we’re trying to get to the playoffs. Munford is a playoff team. Coach (Isiah) Gaddis always does a great job with them. We’ve seen them in the regionals at Jacksonville State and that’s where were trying to get to in Montgomery. I’m just happy with the win. It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it. We practice tomorrow in the morning; we’ve got to work on some things and get some things done.”

With 14.1 seconds left in the game, Crystyle Stockdale went to the foul line. He made one of two free throws to give TC Central a 48-46 lead.

With 8.1 seconds, Tavon Lawson drove inside to the post, hit a basket and received a foul call. He missed the free throw, leaving the game tied 48-48.

With 6.5 seconds left, TC Central called a timeout. Cederick Garrett made an attempt at a 3-pointer, but it missed sending the game into overtime.

“When we sent it to overtime, we felt pretty confident,” Munford’s CJ Chapman said. “We thought we had it. We were going to come back, but sometimes you’ve got to lose some so you can win some.”

Garrett made a basket inside to start the overtime period, giving TC Central a 50-48 lead.

Monteo Garrett came up with a steal but missed the ensuing layup.

With 1:23 left, Zekyle Stockdale hit two free throws to push TC Central’s lead to 52-48.

Despite being double-teamed, Chapman managed to hit a shot from the corner to cut the lead to 52-50.

“I just saw an opening, so I just pulled up and hoped for the best,” Chapman said.

Monteo Garrett blew past two defenders near the baseline for a two-point basket to tie the game, 52-52.

With 31.0 seconds left, TC Central called a timeout. Cededrick Garrett drove inside and hit a two-point basket.

“That was just a simple play that we use, a man play,” Dorsey said. “They played man. Cededrick Garrett, a senior who had been going up and down, came up with a great play. I’m proud of him for stepping up to the plate like a senior should do. He had some mistakes early, but came back and atoned for it just like a senior should.”

Munford had one last chance to tie the game or win it with a 3-pointer. Monteo Garrett tried a 3-pointer, but it missed.

“We just came up short at the end,” Chapman said. “Monteo had a good look at the goal but just fell short.”

Tervarus Garrett led TC Central in scoring with 23 points, while Crystyle Stockdale finished the game with 14 points.

Munford was led by Monteo Garret, who finished with 18 points, while Tavon Lawson had 17 points.

TC Central plays Winterboro tonight at 6 p.m., while Munford faces Talladega at 7:30 p.m.
