SYLACAUGA – An 81-year-old man died in a three-vehicle wreck Thursday, according to state Department of Public Safety public information specialist Robyn Bradley Litchfield.

Edward Guy of Sylacauga was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:40 a.m., said Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy. The incident occurred on U.S. 280 near the Old Birmingham Highway intersection in Oak Grove.

“(Guy) had pulled out of the Shell station at Merkel Mountain and began traveling up 280 on the wrong side and struck a van head on,” Murphy said.

Guy was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma and collided with a 1991 Ford driven by Marcus Briggs, 30, of Hoover, Litchfield said. Briggs and two passengers were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Guy was not wearing a seatbelt, Litchfield said, and the cause of death, Murphy said, was blunt force trauma.

A third vehicle was slightly impacted in the incident, and the driver was not injured, Litchfield said.

No further details were available Thursday as State Troopers continued to investigate.
