St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Joe Sweatt said Marquez Turner, 18, of 4654 Dan Bowie Drive robbed TNT Raceway on the night of Dec. 27 at about 8 p.m. Raceway is directly across from what used to be Paul Manning’s BBQ on U.S. 231.
“He got a small amount of money after he pulled a handgun on the owner Thomas Whitt,” Sweatt said. “A juvenile brought Turner up there, and was sitting in a car across the road from Raceway. Fortunately, a couple of local guys were pumping gas at Raceway, and was able to figure out what was going on.”
Sweatt said the juvenile sitting in the car got scared and took off without Turner. He turned right onto Alabama 144 toward Ragland.
“The juvenile went to a residence off Memory Drive where he was later taken into custody,” Sweatt said. “His 72-hour hearing was held Jan. 2, and he was released back into the custody of his parents.”
Sweatt said Turner ran across the highway and was headed toward 144 and ran into the woods. He dropped some of the cash along the way.
“Whitt had called 911, and it wasn’t long before deputies apprehended Turner in the woods,” Sweatt said. “He was taken to the St. Clair County Jail in Pell City. He has already made $25,000 bond.”
Sweatt said the two men pumping gas deserve thanks for stepping up and helping out.
Turner’s initial court date was not available as of press time.
