Lady Tornadoes use late run to defeat Concordia-Selma

TALLADEGA—The Talladega College Lady Tornadoes received a spirited effort from their opponent Tuesday night, the Concordia College-Selma Lady Hornets, but TC proved too much in the end, winning 70-58.

The majority of the first half between TC and Concordia College-Selma was a close contest, but with more than six minutes left, TC began to pull away. The Lady Tornadoes reeled off a 19-2 run to from a slender 20-16 lead to a commanding 39-18 lead. Tianna Jones started the run by knocking down two free throws. Ryann Drear followed that up with back-to-back baskets, the first a 3-pointer, followed by a steal and layup to give TC a double-digit lead of 27-16. Ella Rodriguez capped the drive with a basket in the post, pushing TC’s lead to 39-18.

Concordia had a 6-0 run to close the gap to 39-24 near halftime. T.T. Johnson and Alaina Strong each hit 3-pointers during the course of the run.

TC had the final basket of the half as Ashawnte Hawkins inbounded under the basket with 10.6 seconds left. Hawkins found Jones cutting to the basket and open in the post for an easy 2-point basket to make the score 41-24 at the half.

Concordia opened the second half on a 12-2 run. Gaybreil Garrett opened and capped the run with a rebound and subsequent putback. Desiree Wilson also hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run. Following Garrett’s second putback, Concordia had cut the TC lead to 43-36.

TC scored a basket on a Jamie Robinson drive inside, but Concordia continued to gain momentum by reeling off another run, this one a 12-1 run. Johnson opened the run by knocking down a pair of free throws. Later in the drive, Johnson converted a 3-point play with a putback and subsequent free throw and then had an assist to an open Garrett down low. Wilson capped the drive with another 3-pointer to give Concordia their first lead since early in the first half, 48-46.

After an exchange of baskets, TC went on a critical 13-4 run. Jordin Feldman started the run with a basket in the post to tie the game, 50-50. Hawkins capped the run with a 3-pointer to give TC a 61-54 lead with 5:06 remaining in the game. More importantly, it gave the Lady Tornadoes control of the game, as they never relinquished their lead.

Robinson and Jackson led the Lady Tornadoes in scoring with both finishing with 16 points. Jackson also led the team in rebounding with 13, while Robinson was second with 10 rebounds.

With the win, the 12th-ranked Lady Tornadoes improved to 13-1 overall.
