Childersburg Mayor B.J. Meeks remained hospitalized Friday, improving after surgery Tuesday to remove cancer in his stomach.

Meeks will have about 25 treatments of combined radiation and low-dose chemotherapy, but his full course of treatment has not been determined, his daughter, Wendy Burpee, said via Facebook message.

“He is feeling much better today and had all drainage tubes removed and is up walking,” she said.

She said the family remains upbeat, but declined to comment on specifics about Meeks’ pathology reports as the family waited Friday afternoon to meet with other members of his medical team.

Meeks served on the Parks and Recreation Board and one term on the Childersburg City Council before being elected mayor in 1984. He served until 1996, then returned to office in 2000 and has been the mayor since. He was elected to his seventh term as mayor in August 2012.

Meeks has been married to his wife, the former Delores Maddox, for 47 years. They have two daughters, Burpee and Michelle Brakefield.

In recognition of his industrial development efforts, the entrance to the Childersburg Industrial Park was named B.J. Meeks Drive in 2012.
