Rescue workers and volunteer firefighters from all over the area came out Saturday to help search for a man who jumped off Stemley Bridge early that morning.

According to St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles, a report came in just after 5 a.m. of a man who had jumped out of a moving car and had gone over the rail. People inside the vehicle tussled with him and tried to keep him from jumping, with no success, Surles said.

The search continued well into Saturday evening, until searchers were called in to the shore of the Coosa River on account of fading light. Wind and current were also factors to be taken into account, Surles said.

Agencies responding in addition to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office included the Etowah County, Talladega, Coosa Valley and Childersburg rescue squads, Pell City Police Department, St. Clair County Hazardous Materials Unit and Vincent, New London and Stemley Volunteer Fire Departments. The search is set to resume today at first light.
