According to Capt. John McCoy, the shooting took place at about 9 p.m. on the 900 block of Howard Street. The victim was sitting in a car parked in the front yard of a residence.
McCoy said the child was struck in the leg by what appeared to be a shot from a small caliber handgun. He was transported to the emergency room of Citizens Baptist Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
There was no one else inside the car with the victim, and no one else was hit. Evidence was that more than one shot was fired, however.
The shooter was likely on foot, he added, since no strange vehicles were reported in the area at the time.
McCoy said Wednesday afternoon that investigators had found no witnesses to the shooting, and there were no suspects.
Even so, it seems that the young victim was unlikely to be the intended target of the shooting, McCoy said.
