Childersburg Mayor B.J. Meeks came home from a Birmingham hospital Wednesday night, more than a week after having surgery to remove stomach cancer.

Meeks’ daughter, Wendy Burpee, said Thursday that the mayor “is still getting settled and trying to get comfortable.”

She said it will be a while before Meeks will be able to have visitors at home.

“He is progressing. He transitioned from a liquid diet to solid food this morning,” she said.

Meeks underwent surgery Jan. 7 at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham to remove some 80 percent of his stomach, as well as some lymph nodes in his abdomen.

He is expected to undergo radiation and low-dose chemotherapy treatments
