“We got word that the child passed away at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham Sunday,” he said. “He had initially been transported to Regional Medical Center in Anniston, and then airlifted to Children’s from there. I was told he was still alive and in stable condition around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. He died sometime after that.”
Investigators have no reason to believe that the incident was anything but an accident, Kilgore said.
“My understanding is that there were several people around, and the child’s parent’s were moving some larger items out of the house. There were also several children playing in the area, and one of the older kids was babysitting,” he said.
The child fell into a pond belonging to a neighbor around 3 Saturday afternoon. “It was muddy and slippery at the time, and it looks like the child just slipped,” he said.
In addition to Talladega County Sheriff’s deputies, Munford Volunteer Fire Department and North Star Ambulance also responded to the initial call.
