HOWELL’S COVE- Fayetteville used a fourth quarter surge to eliminate ASD, 49-36 in the Class 1A Area 7 tournament on Tuesday night in Clarence Marble gymnasium in Howell’s Cove.

With the win, Fayetteville advances to play TC Central on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“It is a big win,” Fayetteville head coach Grant Maddox said. “We had a lot of trouble this season with our shots not falling. It was evident tonight with us not shooting the ball very well. At halftime I told them keep shooting and that things were going to fall for us. I told them at halftime to take the ball to the basket a little bit more. I think we did a good job and we went back into our press to change things up and I think that helped us out in the game. I am proud of them, they played hard tonight. We just have to continue to work on shooting. That has been our issue all season long.”

Both teams struggled at times scoring in the first half. The Wolves took a 12-11 lead going into the second quarter. Tyari Powell Welch scored five points in the opening quarter, which included a towering dunk which got the Fayetteville faithful to their feet.

In the second quarter, the game continued to go back and forth. Rydrea Walker gave ASD a 13-12 lead off a layup. Walker continued to make plays for ASD as he drove to the basket for layup to give the Silent Warriors a 17-15 lead. Fayetteville’s Weston Brasell tied the game at 17-17 with a put back with three minutes left in the half. Tyler Pennington hit a 3-pointer to give Fayetteville a 20-17 lead. Walker cut the lead down to 20-19 on a layup. Eddie Thomas hit a free throw with six seconds left in half to tie the game at 20-20.

The Wolves opened the second half on an 11-3 run. Pennington opened the quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game 23-23. Darious Cook scored a layup in transition of the assist from Powell-Welch. Pennington capped off the run with a 3-pointer to give Fayetteville a 31-22 lead with 3:33 left in the third quarter.

The Silent Warriors responded with a 7-0 run to end the quarter. Cody Maddox started the run with a layup to cut Fayetteville lead down 33-25. Anthony Scott hit a layup to make it 33-28. Thomas scored three points during the run including a layup to cut the Wolves lead to 33-30 going into the fourth quarter.

The final eight minutes belonged to Fayetteville as their three point lead ballooned to 13 points when the final horn sounded.

Powell-Welch scored four quick points including a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Fayetteville on top 37-30. Pennington continued to find his stroke in the fourth quarter where he scored five of his game high 15 points. His 3-pointer increased the Wolves to 42-34 lead.

“I talked to him at halftime and he was depressed a little bit, Maddox said. “I told him if you are open I want you to keep shooting it until it falls. When we started pressuring them, we created a lot of turnovers. I told them at halftime if you get the turnover you have to answer and that is the reason we got the win tonight.”

Lucas Gaddis put the game out of reach with a layup to increase their lead to 46-36.

“Our boys played their best and they played hard,”ASD head coach Walter Ripley said. “Give credit to Fayetteville.”

The Silent Warriors are losing four seniors from this season’s team.

“We have four seniors and they help us during practice every day and we are going to miss their leadership on the court,” Ripley said.
