PELL CITY - A woman remains in critical condition Thursday after colliding head-on with a pickup truck late Wednesday on Stemley Bridge Road.

A University Hospital spokesperson said Whitney Lynn Hale, 26, of Pell City remains at University in critical condition.

Sgt. Don Newton, public information officer for the Pell City Police Department, said a Talladega couple, identified as Samuel Cooper, 59, and Laura Cooper, 56, were also transported to University Hospital, but no information about their conditions was available Thursday.

Newton said the crash happened at about 4:59 p.m., and the emergency call was received by first responders and police at 5:02 p.m. Emergency workers were on the scene at 5:05 p.m.

The accident happened at about the 5200 block of Stemley Bridge Road between Pine Harbor Road and Allen Road.

Newton said Hale was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix west on Stemley Bridge Road toward Pell City.

He said that according to witness accounts, Hale was traveling at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles. She apparently lost control of her vehicle and left the roadway.

Newton said Hale re-entered the roadway and crossed the double yellow line, colliding with the 2012 Toyota Tundra the Coopers were traveling in on the eastbound side of Stemley Bridge Road.

Newton said the accident is still under investigation.
