Sylacauga Police Capt. Kelley Johnson was named assistant police chief by Chief Chris Carden during a City Council meeting Wednesday. Carden said the title is honorary, as Johnson already serves as second-in-command, but he felt it would serve as a nice recognition of Johnson’s work.

“I’m not the easiest person to work with or for, and I’m aware of that,” Carden said, “but Kelley and I work so well together that it just works.”

In his presentation, Carden charged Johnson to “uphold the traditions and core values of the Sylacauga Police Department. You are to exemplify a high degree of moral courage and dedication to the Sylacauga Police Department, which will serve as an example to all employees and all citizens of this great city.”

Johnson has been with Sylacauga Police for more than 10 years and was promoted to captain in 2012.
