Talladega pounded the visiting Golden Eagles 33-14 in the first quarter with junior guard Josh Madden scoring 21 points in the quarter. That included five of his seven three-pointers for the night, shot from alternating corners of the court.
The Tigers expanded their 19-point lead to 23 by halftime, leading 51-28, and to 25 by the end of the third, 68-43.
“We hit a lot of shots in the first quarter, but they played us tough the rest of the way,” Talladega coach Chucky Miller said. “They made adjustments to shut Madden down in the second quarter, and their size hurt us at times, but we’re not a one-man team. The other guys stood up. Their intensity was real good tonight.”
The Eagles had a height advantage over Talladega at most positions that was overcome by solid, unrelenting team play on both ends of the court.
D’Angelo Scales ended the night with 8 points and 9 assists. Desmond Green had 11 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Ahmad Gooden scored 12 points and had 4 steals and 5 rebounds.
The Eagles had three players in double figures, Cortez Gibbs with 15 points, Cornelius Biggs with 12 and Quindravis Gibbs with 12.
Talladega is scheduled to play Central of Tuscaloosa Wednesday morning at 10:30 in Alabama State’s Acadome in Montgomery. Central Tuscaloosa, the Area 7 runner-ups, upset Area 6 winner Sumter Central 54-52 last night.
Talladega now has a 29-2 record for the season.
