“We’re searching for funding,” said Jason Goodgame, president of the Pell City Schools Educational Foundation.
He said hard economic times have filtered down to the foundation as it struggles to find funds to help support the School System.
“Our goal is to take in about $30,000 each year,” Goodgame said. “We’re about at half of that, $15,000.”
Each fall, the foundation awards grant money to Pell City School System teachers, who use the money in the classroom. Last year, the foundation awarded 73 grants totaling more than $32,000.
Goodgame said the grant money comes from the interest made on foundation money. Currently the foundation has about $700,000 and uses the interest made on investments with that money to fund teacher grants each year.
He said since 1992, the 501C3 non-profit organization has awarded $256,600 through its teacher grant program.
He said the main revenue for the Pell City Schools Educational Foundation is the foundation’s chair program. When an individual, organization or business donates $10,000 to the foundation, the charity giver is awarded a foundation chair, and their name is publicly displayed in the school of their choosing.
However, Goodgame said people can donate any amount of money to the Pell City Schools Education Foundation.
“Since we’ve been in existence, we’ve had people donate $100 to $200 a year,” he said. “We try to acknowledge them at the end of the year in our annual report.”
Goodgame said donations to the Pell City Schools Educational Foundation are tax deductible, and the foundation even offers payroll deductions.
“Some people don’t realize we do accept smaller donations,” Goodgame said.
Anyone wishing to donate money to the Pell City Schools Educational Foundation may send a check or money order to the Pell City Schools Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 272, Pell City, Alabama 35125.
