“We wish her much happiness in her retirement and thank her for her many contributions to this system,” said Doug Campbell, who became interim superintendent upon Horton’s retirement. “It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with you and to get to know you. You are a caring human being and a professional educator in every way.”
Campbell went on to praise Horton for her “thoughts and expertise” before presenting her with a plaque from the board.
“I am honored to have been associated with you, and I am honored to call you friend. Godspeed, Dr. Horton.”
From the principals of the various schools, Horton received several pictures of herself interacting with children of various ages, and from the administrative staff she got a card and gift card.
Then, on behalf of the entire system, Campbell presented her with a silver bowl, similar to the ones she had given out to retiring teachers.
“I finally got one,” Horton said after unwrapping the bowl. “I’ve been giving these away for two years now.”
In closing, Horton said, “This is what happens when everyone works together. I thank you, and I will see you all when our paths cross again.”
