Childersburg’s Donald Hulsey knew how to inspire his grandchildren to read this summer, he got involved in their everyday lives so they would become involved in reading.

Almost every day, he would hop aboard his own bicycle and accompany his bike-riding grandchildren to the Rainwater library to check out books as part of their summer reading program.

Along the way, he added to his entourage with a few more of the neighbor children getting involved in the readathon as well.

For their efforts, Cory and Desirae Hulsey won new bicycles for winning the summer reading contest. But as their grandfather so aptly put it, they won much more than shiny new bikes for their good work.

“Reading is understanding,” he said. “And the better they read, the better they are going to do in life.”
