Of special note: Duke gets special honor

As coach of the 1970 state championship basketball team of Sylacauga’s East Highland High School, Dwight Duke did more than just coach the team to a state crown.

He taught the team about life. A white coach and an all black team in an era of racial unrest showed what can be done when people do not judge each other by the color of their skin. Instead, they worked together — not individually, but as a team — to make good things happen.

And on the 39th anniversary of that championship season, Duke was honored by his former players in a special banquet. They let him know that he taught them more than just how to play basketball. He taught them how to be men.

We salute Duke and what he has meant to the community and his players. The honor is long overdue.
