For five years, Sylacauga School System's Summer Cafe has been providing children of the area with a nutritious meal at lunch all summer long.

More than 200 children take advantage of the program, which seeks to ensure that children are provided a meal if they need it, and they eat nutritiously, even when they are not in school.

It was a good idea that has turned into an effective tradition each summer, and we commend the efforts of the school system in providing such a service.

It gives children under the age of 18 an opportunity to eat a well balanced meal for free throughout the summer months.

And it sends a strong message to children that they have a special place in Sylacauga.
