ST. CLAIR COUNTY — A one-vehicle accident Friday on U.S. 78 near Cook Springs left the driver of the vehicle dead.

St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Mike Pepple pronounced Martha T. Etheredge, 72, dead on the scene at 1:40 p.m. He said she died from blunt force trauma. Pepple said Etheredge lived on Stemley Bridge Road and was driving a Toyota Scion.

Etheredge, Pepple said, was the widow of Bruce Etheredge, former St. Clair County Commission member and chairman.

The accident was near 7624 U.S. 78 about 3 miles from Interstate 20.

Pepple said the body was taken to the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office until immediate family could be notified.

Working the accident were the Alabama State Troopers, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cook Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
