SYLACAUGA — The Police Department is hosting the 26th annual National Night Out this Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Noble Park, to generate interest in constructive activities that will prevent crime and promote support for local efforts to fight crime.

The evening will kick off at 5 p.m., and will last until 8 p.m., featuring live music and free Blue Bell ice cream. Members of The Sanctuary Church will be cooking hot dogs for guests who attend this year’s National Night Out, said Lt. Mike Gorman.

It will be a night for families to enjoy entertainment and the company of their neighbors, and learn how to improve Sylacauga through anticrime and drug prevention efforts, he said.

The police department, Sylacauga’s Alliance for Family Enhancement, Caradale Lodge, First United Methodist Church, The Sanctuary and others will have display tables set up at the park to hand out materials and interact with others in the community.

These are a few among the many organizations that continue to make Sylacauga one of the top places for young people to live in the United States.

National Night Out is an evening devoted to promote the wholesome activities and opportunities as a way of preventing crime and drug and alcohol abuse among youth in communities across the country.

Cheaha Regional Mental Health Center prevention specialist Richard Bonds said local organizations and churches are encouraged to participate in National Night Out by setting up tables at Noble Park to hand out material and interact with people.

Last year citizens, law enforcement agencies, civil groups, local businesses and officials from more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states participated in the unique drug prevention event.

Its purpose, according to NNO’s Web site, is designed to:

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

• Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs

• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships

• Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
