We have always wondered what could be accomplished if all the various groups and civic leaders in Talladega began working together for a common cause.

If plans discussed this week regarding the city’s 175th anniversary celebration next year are any indication, the sky is the limit.

Everybody from the city government to historic preservation groups and the Ritz Theatre to merchants associations and the chamber, not to mention countless individual local residents and businesses, everybody is teaming up to make the event something truly special for Talladega.

The diversity of the people working on organizing and planning the festivities is reflected in the wide range of events planned to celebrate Talladega’s long and rich heritage.

Dance lessons and exhibitions, live music, movies, fireworks and an antique car show are all being considered, and the list of all the possible events includes much more.

Organizers also have plans for a video and maybe even a print publication showcasing Talladega’s history.

The good news for the community surrounding this celebration goes on and on.

But, what is possibly the most important part of all of this is that it shows everyone the best side of Talladega — that the community can come together and create something good for the city.

It’s something many residents in Talladega have always been aware of but so rarely take note of.

This 175th celebration is something everyone in Talladega should be proud of and is an excellent opportunity to bring our community closer together while at the same time showing off everything good about Talladega to people and businesses from outside the area.

All this cooperation just reinforces the fact that, despite some misconceptions about the quality of life in this community, it is a good place to live and work.

If local community leaders, businesses and residents let it, this celebration and what it demonstrates Talladegans can do could set the stage for the city to grow and prosper well into the future.
