TALLADEGA – The Talladega College Lady Tornadoes volleyball team has a lot to live up to when they take the court against LeMoyne-Owen College today at 5 p.m. in Callanan Gymnasium.

The Lady Tornadoes finished just under .500 last season, but they were undefeated at home. That streak is something second year head coach Rebecca Williams hopes will continue into the 2009 season.

Apiffany Richards, a senior and one of just two returning players for TC, said the team has high hopes for her final season. And it extends far beyond keeping the home winning streak alive.

“Hopefully we’ll have a successful season and we’ll make it to the championship,” Richards said Wednesday.

The senior will serve as a leader for a Lady Tornadoes squad consisting mostly of freshmen. Williams said she recruited young players with plans to build the program at TC.

“We’re trying to build here so I went out and tried to recruit mostly freshmen,” she said. “I got one transfer that came from Texas College.”

One new player comes to Talladega College with great expectations for her freshman season.

“I’m excited about (the season) and I hope we get to the championship,” freshman Gabrielle Powell said. “(My goal is) to make it as MVP my first year.”

Williams said the team is coming together “very well.”

“I couldn’t ask for a better group all the way around,” Williams said. “Grades in the classroom – we have a couple of presidential scholars – all around it’s a great team.”

Richards said the team is “coming together.”

“Hopefully we’ll gel on the court,” Richards said. “We’ll be like one on the court.”

The Lady Tornadoes open the season against a LeMoyne-Owen team that has five players returning from a year ago and a new coach in Julia Turner. Williams’ players will try to extend that home winning streak when they face the Lady Magicians today.

“From last year to this year we’re undefeated (at home),” Williams said. “I think these ladies are ready to step up to the plate.”

The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Callanan Gymnasium on the campus of Talladega College.
