“The council examined the situation and feels the community is better served by a park department than by a park board at this point,” Mayor Lew Watson said.
Watson said the city created the Park Board in 1985. The board managed the many parks on a voluntary basis.
“The council recognizes the efforts and accomplishments of the board in managing the many parks of the city,” the ordinance adopted Thursday reads. “With the growth of the city and its parks it is the determination of the council that the operation of the parks may be better served by having a Park and Recreation Department.”
The resolution establishing a Park and Recreation Department states that “the success of the city park programs may be greatly enhanced by the establishment of a staff with a knowledge of recreational programs to assist with the park programs and the mayor shall appoint a director over the Park and Recreation Department with the approval of the City Council.”
Watson said the ordinance must be posted for five days before any action can be taken.
“The council will have to appoint a director over the new park department in the near future,” he said.
“We all enjoyed serving on the park board,” board chairman Paul Watry said.
Also Thursday, the council approved the paving of the new Water Department parking area by Sturkie Brothers Paving Company in the amount of $18,030.

He was the only mayor I ever knew to always at least try to do everything he said he would. Only two other mayors ever took time to listen to any comment or complaint I went to them with. That being Mayor Hardwick, and Mayor Osborne.... two other fine men who held that office. All three of these men were full time mayors, who did the job as mayor, and not just a title carrier. This is the kind of city government Talladega needs now...no matter whom the mayor may be. He needs to hold that power, and not some city mgr. that don't even know our city, nor really care about us. We need a mayor we know we can go to and know he has authority to do what needs to be done on his own merit, and not have to run to some city mgr.that he may or may not be able to find. Talladega needs to return to our previous form of government.
