"We're gonna build you a new hospital."

That was the promise of St. Vincent's CEO John O'Neil following Friday morning's meeting of the St. Clair County Commission. After a long, tense negotiating period, the commissioners approved a letter of intent for a replacement hospital in the county, with all the commissioners voting "aye."

The vote had been tabled from Tuesday's regular meeting, and continued to Friday morning. Friday's re-convening of the meeting drew a packed house representing veterans, St. Vincent's officials and interested citizens.

See tomorrow's print edition, or this evening's online edition for the full story.
