TALLADEGA _— The Talladega Police Department has been named the best in the state “for enforcing Alabama’s seat-belt laws during the national ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign earlier this year,” according to a press release issued Friday by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. ADECA administers the program.

“It only takes a few seconds to put on a seatbelt, but the consequences of not doing it are costly, and can be deadly,” according to ADECA Director Doni Ingram. “I commend Chief Alan Watson and the officers of the Talladega Police Department for their service and dedication to saving lives.”

During the program’s enforcement period, from May 18 to 31, police conducted extra patrols and issued 167 seatbelt or child restraint citations.

Municipal police departments in Hanceville and Powell ranked just behind Talladega, according to the release.

“I’m very proud of them,” Watson said. “I know lots of people look at this as just writing tickets, but my officers and I look at it as saving lives. And we’ve been working hard on DUI’s as well.”

Watson said he and his officers are thoroughly convinced “this saves lives. We had a handful of officers working their off days and weekends, and obviously being named the top department in the state says a lot about their performance. This is a program we have participated in since it started in 2001, and we will continue to support it. Traffic deaths and serious injuries have been declining, so we are making a difference enforcing the law and being out there in force, especially during holiday weekends.”

It seems like drugs are a real problem in talladega. I hope the police department will feel these peoples pain and make it a priority for them. Lets let everyone know that drugs are not welcome in our wonderful city. God bless you all and keep the Talladega police department and the people in our prayers.

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A BUNCH OF BABY'S WHO HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAT DEGRADE THE POLICE, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE. THE TALLADEGA POLICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT WRITE THE LAW. THE TALLADEGA POLICE DEPARTMENT IS HOWEVER CHARGED WITH ENFORCING THE LAW. THEY DID THEIR JOB AND THEY DID IT WELL. MAYBE IF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT GOT SUPPORT FROM ALL OF YOU INSTEAD OF THE CONSTANT BERADING, YOU MIGHT SEE MORE ACTION AGAINST DRUGS. IF YOU THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THAT THE DRUG PROBLEM IS UNIQUE TO TALLADEGA THEN YOU ARE AS STUPID AS YOU SOUND WITH YOUR COMMENTS.

Seat belt laws are great for children, but as an adult we should have the right to make up our own mind. If you are an adult and choose to not wear a seatbelt and you have an accident, it hurts no one but yourself, so why should goverment have its finger in it.Daily Home, if you want a reaction with your readers, contact mr Ingram of adeca and ask why the citizens dont have a say in this matter. If we are all so ignorant that we cant make these choices for our selves, maybe we should all wear epileptic helmets and ask for a check.

Now, now, people....the Talladega Police Department is also noted for their expertise in setting up, defenseless old ladies and stealing their property, as in the infamous "raid" on Cemetery Mtn.

Bet that generated some fast revenue. The dogs taken disappeared quickly and as we know were "high dollar" purebreds for the most part.

Way to go Talladega....people without seat belts and old ladies....seems like the PD has so much to be proud of.

Yea, let's give it up for the Talladega PD. That's certainly something to be proud of. Other departments are getting awards and honors for fighting crime, getting drugs off the streets and other unimportant things. Give yourselves a pat on the back, boys. In fact, go ahead and take a few days off. You deserve it after a long hard day of sitting in your patrol car with the engine running, smoking a cigarette and flirting with girls. Way to go!

It can never be expressed in words how warm and fuzzy it makes people feel to know that while they are driving their "motor vehicles" around on the government owned highways they are being scrutinized to the point to if they make an error in the way they navigate the vehicle they will end up with a ticket and a court date to detirmine how much money will be extracted from them for this grevious error. The seat belt law was put in place to generate income and that alone, howbiet the propoganda put out will say that they ( the police ) are only doing this because they care so much about your saftey. This is a quote from the article above : "“I’m very proud of them,” Watson said. “I know lots of people look at this as just writing tickets, but my officers and I look at it as saving lives." To be the best in the State for anything I could have hoped it would be for something honorable like the least amount of crime as per the population but instead the best in the State for writing a boat load of tickets. I would have thought Sylacauga would have won out on this one as their police are just as busy generating revenue. What a shame.

The seatbelt law is ONLY a means for extra revenue. Every state had federal money for roads and highways dangled under their noses if mandatory seatbelt laws were passed. It has NOTHING to do with public safety. If that were the case motorcycles wouldn't even be allowed on public streets and highways. Wearing a seatbelt should be a personal CHOICE. However, our federal police state in which we now live creates assinine laws that we are indoctinated into believing is for our good. BULL!!

Amen Razorwire! They need to focus on the real problems to clean up our cities from drugs and crime. A friend of mine got a seat-belt ticket because he left the Tiger-Mart gas station in Childersburg (right before the bridge) and forgot to put it back on - he went over the bridge and got pulled over. He has tinted windows and ask the policeman how he saw him? The police told him they gave them binoculars to check for seat-belts!!!! Ridiculous.

I don't believe the seat belt law was ever passed but for one reason and that is to collect money without going up on taxes. Best in the state for writing tickets at road blocks is not something I would be proud of a police department doing. I think spending more time on getting drugs off the street and making the city a safer place to live would be more in line of what the police department is suppose to do.
