Students at Drew Middle School in Lincoln remembered the fallen of 9/11 eight years ago in a special way.

About 250 students honored the memory of those killed in attacks on the Pentagon, World Trade Center and a diverted airplane that crashed in a Pennsylvania field.

They did so by holding a Freedom Walk, carrying signs, banners and flags to show their pride. They walked eight laps around the school’s halls, signifying each year since the attack.

And they recognized personnel from Lincoln Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln Police Department as emergency responders, the same career path the first responders to the attacks had followed. Members of both departments also participated in the walk.

It was a meaningful way to honor the memory of the 3,000 victims of 9/11, and we salute the school for its tribute.
