The $120 million project that involves three corporations, the cities of Leeds and Moody and the county of St. Clair has been a formidable undertaking from the beginning. The entities involved have been to court and have amended and approved five successive agreements en route to this day.
But it appears that the day is finally here, and Daniel Corp. is ready to proceed with an outlet mall at the 140 Exit near Bass Pro Shops and Barber Motorsports.
Although that may seem distant from parts of the coverage area, the impact should be felt throughout the region. It will become a destination point in Alabama, and that means an outgrowth of business and residential all around it.
Officials involved in the negotiations have been doggedly dedicated to the project, finding ways to partner with one another to bring it about. It is a regional effort that is inspirational in its planning stages and in what it will mean to all involved.
A revenue sharing plan for taxes generated from the Grand River and Bass Pro projects crosses county lines and city limits, demonstrating how regionalism can work. And in years from now, observers will look back at this day and see how it changed the region for the better.
