“I think we did a very good job,” sophomore Jessica Futrell said. ”I think we did an excellent job tonight as a whole and we beat them in three and that is what I like. I like when we win in three’ I do not like when we go to five games, so I think we played a excellent game as a whole.”
In the first game Lane College took an early 7-5 lead behind the serve of Alexandria Macklin. Futrell would give the Lady Tornadoes (6-2) momentum with a powerful kill to tie the game at 7-7. The momentum carried over for the Lady Tornadoes as they built a 12-7 lead from the serves of Appiffany Richardson.
The Lady Dragons would get within four points but that’s as close as they would get as TC secured the victory by scoring the last six points of the game.
In the second game the Lady Tornadoes cruised to a 25-19 victory. TC opened the game on a 7-0 run on the serve of Futrell. Back to back kills by Apiffany Richards gave the Lady Tornadoes a 15-5 lead. TC closed out the game on a 10-4 run.
“Our coach teaches us to talk, because if we don’t talk we will get down on ourselves and the other team will get points on us,” Richards said. “So we just kept talking and we kept cheering after every point and that’s what ended up giving us the victory.”
The Lady Tornadoes continued to cruise in the third and final game. Freshman Zia Mose scored three points, which included a kill to make it 14-3. Richards recorded her ninth kill of the game - a powerful one, which made it 18-5.
Mose closed the game out with four points off of her serve.
“I felt like we played a good game,” Mose said. “But it really was not to the best of our ability. As a team and as our setter adjusted to all the hitters, we all had good hits tonight and we all played a good game.
Futrell recorded 13 kills out of 13 attempts to lead the Lady Tornadoes.
“I think I did real good,” Futrell said. “I am so proud of myself because I love for my stats to be higher than anyone else’s so I play to my best.”
Richards had a solid game as she recorded nine kills out of 11 attempts. Gabrielle Powell recorded eight kills on 16 attempts. Bea Anderson led the Lady Tornadoes with 26 assists.
The Tornadoes will travel to take on Morris College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
