MUNFORD – The Stewart pecan tree that sparked a debate between the Munford Town Council and the town’s seniors will be cut down as planned.

The conflict stemmed from a decision at the last council meeting to remove two pecan trees next to town hall and in the yard adjacent to the senior center. The decision let to a protest by members of the senior center who felt the Stewart pecan next to town hall was too important to the town to be taken away.

During the town work session on Tuesday, the council decided to maintain its vote from that meeting to remove the tree. Mayor Lynn Swinford said the council weighed all the safety factors and the seniors’ protests before decided not to revote on the matter.

“The bottom line is we don’t want to see any of the seniors getting hurt,” Swinford said.

The council agreed that the falling limbs from the tree posed too much of a safety hazard, particularly with people of all ages collecting pecans underneath it.

“I don’t want to see it go either. I picked pecans there myself, but if you look at it good, it’s susceptible to limbs falling,” he said.

Councilman Wade Champion added that he had discussed partial removal of only certain limbs with a tree service, but learned that would not eliminate any lasting safety risks.

The council decided that as the vote had already passed, the decision would stay.

The seniors had protested because they not only felt the tree was a landmark, but because most of them remember growing up with it being as part of their environment. Many continue to pick its pecans every year.

Judith Moon, Director of the senior center in Munford said that although the seniors didn’t agree with the council’s decision, they would respect it. She felt the decision came partially from the council not identifying with them.

“We appreciate everything the city does for the seniors, but they need to get more involved with them,” she said.

I have an Idea let's UNINCORPORATE MUNFORD and QUIT WASTING OUR MONEY!! Only in Munford can a councilman live out of the town limit's, certain people get paid to do nothing and the work has to be contracted out to a certain business that cost more than what it should because it's a BUBBA THING. You can't vote someone out that has family that takes up most of the population. IMPEACH YES get the FEDS to AUDIT MUNFORD then maybe things can be better. I know I'm tired of paying TAXES for nothing. Look around and see what has not been done, only thing I've see done is NO TRESSPASSING,and NO PARKING SIGNS put up and for what, so the Fire Dept. can charge for parking during the ball games. This is a Volunteer Fire Dept. that receives grants and other funding to operate on. The Chief is not even qualified to be DOG CATCHER much less the Fire Chief, what ever happened to the investigation about him misusing the Fire Dept. credit card, I know it got swept under the rug like most of the wrongful things that go on in Munford usually do. Another thing WHO GOT THE WOOD from the PECAN TREES? Look across the road from Town Hall and you'll see. If the Munford Weekly was a newspaper then they would quit making Munford into another MAYBERRY and write the actual news good and bad. As I see it the Town of Munford will never change for the better as long as you have family members working for each other and council members that can't speak for themselves because they are just keeping the seat warm and hoping they don't get replaced. Thank you for your time and reading this. GOD BLESS

Larry, I appreciate you standing up for my spelling, some people don't appreciate the elders ways of life. Elder people don't like change, you know that as well as i do.And for the others that has something to say about my spelling i think i do a good for a 6th grade education and i am internet illeterate, and dislexic on top of it, now if you want spell check Mr.Anonymous you go right ahead and use your spell check, at least people like Larry Barton has the respect of people like myself to stand up for what is right; And use there name instead of being ashamed of letting people know who they are, I might know you, you could be a good person, i can't realy say. It is hard to pass judgment on someone that you don't know, Mr. Anonymous. If you didn't understand what i said, about the officials in Munford there is better things to do than to cut down trees, such as drug dealers, drunk drivers, sunday alcahol sales, ect. So Mr. Anonymous have a great evening, and once again Thanks Larry for your words and honesty.

I never cease to be amazed how some, who either don't know who they are or ashamed of who they are, will criticize klgeorge for mispelling, when that is not the issue at hand. The issue is that the elected officials are ignoring a group of senior citizens who have lived in this area most or all their life and are concerned about the tree being cut down. Having served as an elected official for eleven years, I can appreciate what they are talking about, and on the other hand, I can appreciate what the Munford officials are facing...In the eyes of many, the officials are going to be wrong regardless of what decision they make or have made... I appreciate the fact that klgeorge not only is concerned and willing to speak out, but has the backbone to print their name....Keep speaking out klgeorge...I understand what you are saying and I think 99.9% of the folks who participate in these sites understand.

The paranoia of the mayor and the city council is exceeded only by people who stay indoors because they're fearful of being struck by a meteor. Odds of a meteor injuring someone ranks nearly as high as a limb falling out of that pecan tree at just the right moment when it is "your time to pass to the great unknown."

So terrible about the tree being cut down. Why couldn't it just be trimmed if it is such a hazard?? KLGeorge, your comment is pitiful and makes no sense at all. How about using spell check next time?

Note to Munford senior citizens: organize opponents for each member of the town council and replace each of them at the next election. Our elected officials have forgotten that they work for US not the other way around. It takes about 15 years for a pecan tree to be mature enough to produce pecans. This tree has never been an issue and rather than simply trim the tree the town council decided to cut it down.

THIS FALL FIRE ‘EM ALL!!! RE-ELECT NOBODY!!!

To the last comment. Please get someone to help you write the next comment. You very much need help in spelling. It is a bad thing to have to cut the Old Tree down. We all enjoy the pecans that it produces every year.

These elected people do not care for anyone, they just take up a vacant seat. The seniors are the ones that built this town. I say vote them out, find someone that can represent the people in a repectful way. It may only be a tree but these people are put in their jobs to listen and represent the ones who put them there. Klgeorge should proof read his/her posts and check his/her spelling, it is confusing to try to read.
