MUNFORD — The Munford Lions picked up their first win in dramatic fashion over the Talladega County Central Fighting Tigers 22-14 on Friday night.

On fourth and eight from the Munford 32 yard line TC Central’s quarterback Cameron Duncan called his own number scampered for what looked like a touchdown before the ball popped out of his hands. One official called Duncan down at the one yard line, the other official said Duncan fumbled before crossing the goal line. The officials huddled and decided that the Fighting Tigers would have to replay the down. On the do over, Shannon Landers would strip Duncan to end TC Central’s come back attempt.

“It is good to get that first win, Munford head coach.” Todd Smith said. “We have been right there on the brink of it for the last few weeks. TC gave us all we wanted and it came down right there to the end on that last play. Our boy made a big play there and we got our first win.”

TC Central head coach DeShon Burney said their last possession pretty much told the story of their night. The Fighting Tigers have lost two out their last three games. “That summed up our night,” Burney said. “This game was everything that we thought it was going to be. That is by far the most talented team that we have coached or played against. They came out and just hit us in the mouth when they got in to that Wing-T and the box. They got rolling down hill and we tried to slow it, they are just a good team. They have played probably two state championship teams in Clay County and Handley and a couple of playoffs teams in hopefully us and Saks. So they have played a murderous road so far. The thing that I am proud of in our kids is that we played until the last snap.”

Missed opportunities hurt the Fighting Tigers in the second half. After falling behind 22-7 in the third quarter Duncan returned the ensuring kick off 74 yards for a TC Central touchdown. Tevin Garrett’s PAT cut the Munford lead to 22-14.

On the Lions ensuring drive Michael Long would cough up the football to TC at Munford’s 32 yard line . Duncan would dump off a pass to Justin Isom for 10 yards. On the next play Duncan would call his own number for a 11 yard gain for first and goal at the Munford nine yard line. On second and goal Duncan would throw an incomplete pass. Duncan was injured on the play and the Fighting Tigers were forced to try a field goal on fourth and goal. goal Garrett’s 30 yard attempt came up short.

“It shifted and I had to make the decision on fourth and goal to either go for it or to try to put points on the board,” Burney said. “I figured that we are down by eight so I figured that we would get the ball twice more in the fourth quarter so I elected to go for the field goal. Tevin kicked the ball great in warm up so we decided to put three on the board so that way if we scored a touchdown it would be for the win. That totally changed momentum if we were able to get that in who knows.”

Good field position helped the Lions get on the board in the second quarter. Chadwick O’Neal would set up the Lions scoring drive by returning the kick off to their own 47 yard line. That return set up a nine play 53 yard drive that was capped of by a Dominique Allen two yard rumble for a touchdown. Long would convert the two-point conversion to give Munford an 8-7 lead.

“We had good punts returns,” Smith said. “We had a chance to really put it to them and they stepped up and made some plays. Their coaching staff and players did a good job. We are fortunate that we made the plays that we needed to make. Especially at the end we were able to stop them.”

On the ensuring drive the Lions defense would force TC Central to punt. Long would return the punt 43 yards to the TC Central 18 yard line. Allen capped of the Lions drive again with his second touchdown of the game from two yards out. The two point conversion by the Lions was good to make it 14-7.

"The officials huddled and decided that the Fighting Tigers would have to replay the down." What is this??? You don't replay that down REF! The official with the best view makes the call; there is no do over. I wasn't there to see the play so I don't know what it was, but I do know there is NO do over in that situation! "One official called Duncan down at the one yard line, the other official said Duncan fumbled before crossing the goal line." WHAT???? If he was DOWN at the one yard line, he can not fumble the ball before crossing the goal line! That play was over. I hope there is an investigation and suspension.
