The Lady Bears were seeded first in the tournament and defeated ninth-seeded Talladega County Central in the first round. In the match, Sidney Hinton and Cara Lett both had one kill. Felicia Hansen added seven kills, four ace serves and five assists. Leniya Gover had seven kills and one ace while Quiyauna Slack put up five ace serves and 11 assists. Cierra Calhoun chipped in with two ace serves.
Lincoln followed that with a victory over Sylacauga before moving on to face Talladega in the semifinals. Hinton had four kills while Jasmin Farley added one kill. Hansen had one kill, seven ace serves and three assists. Gover served two aces and had two kills.
Slack had seven ace serves and four assists. Kayla Hogeland added one assists. Calhoun had three ace serves and an assist while Linsey Sims contributed two ace serves.
The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Tigers to remain in the winners’ bracket and advance to the championship match.
Hinton had one kill and five ace serves in the first match against Talladega. Hansen added four kills, two ace serves and eight assists. Gover had 10 kills while Slack chipped in five assists. Calhoun served up two aces and 10 kills while Farley added an assist and Hinton had two kills.
Talladega dropped to the losers’ bracket and defeated Munford, 2-0 to advance to the championship match where the Lady Tigers fell to Lincoln in two games.
“The girls worked hard,” Talladega head coach Jeanette Seals said. “I’m proud of the way that they played today, all day. I hope that today showed them their potential and what they’re capable of.”
Slack had an ace serve and five assists. Hansen served six aces and had seven assists and four kills. Gover added two ace serves and 10 kills. Farley had one assist and Hinton added two kills.
Slack was perfect (48 of 48) in her serving all day, with a total of 13 aces.
“We played well all day long,” Lincoln head coach Patty Hansen said. “We had very few errors. They played as a team. I had girls contributing in all positions. It wasn’t just those who made the All-Tournament Team. It was just a whole team effort; that’s what it takes.”
Lincoln’s coach lauded the play of all of her players and said her team would like to thank Alabama School for the Deaf’s team for staying around and cheering for them in the championship match.
The Lady Bears move to 19-15 on the season and are 12-0 against county teams this season. Lincoln returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Anniston for a tri-match with the host team and Weaver.
Notes: Fayetteville, seeded second, lost to Munford in the first round and to B.B. Comer in the second…Talladega defeated Comer and Munford before losing to Lincoln and facing Munford again…Winterboro, seeded fourth, lost to Sylacauga and Childersburg…Sylacauga, seeded fifth, beat Winterboro before losing to Lincoln and Comer…Comer lost to Munford in the loser’s bracket to end the Lady Tigers’ day short of the championship…Munford (seeded seventh) defeated Childersburg, Talladega County Central and B.B. Comer and lost to Talladega twice. The Lady Lions finished third…ASD (seeded eighth) lost to TC Central (ninth seed) and Comer…TC Central lost to Lincoln before defeating Childersburg and falling to Munford.
