TALLADEGA COUNTY — The Board of Education is giving its students the gift of transportation.

At a called board meeting Thursday, the school board approved the purchase of 62 school buses. The buses will cost $4,328,905, and the board approved a short-term loan from First National Bank of Talladega to make it happen immediately. The loan will carry a 4.75 percent interest rate.

Alan Zeigler of the Birmingham law firm Bradley Arant helped facilitate the purchase. He said he expects this loan to be retired early and replaced with a long-term one that will allow repayment within 10 years.

Schools Superintendent Suzanne Lacey said that being able to purchase the buses immediately through this short-term loan was “Christmas in October.”

The buses were purchased from Southland International in Birmingham.

The purchase of the new buses coincided with the board’s approval of a state resolution declaring Oct. 19-23 School Bus Safety Week.

The board also approved a Continuous Improvement Plan for Winterboro High School. This plan is required by the state as WHS is enrolled in a program that monitors student performance and graduation rates.

In personnel matters, three Child Nutrition Program assistants were hired. Jerri Cribbs and Linda Tyler will work in CNP at Fayetteville High School and Jody Ingram will work at Lincoln Elementary School.

Martha Gail Cook of Munford High School, Rachael Harmon of Lincoln High School and Sonja Tyree of the Talladega County Schools central office will all be taking medical leaves of absence.

WOW...it is so interesting to see the evolution of a thread that started out with comments about a school bus purchase that turns into personal and professional attacks on individuals that we don't have a clue as to their identity...and I wondered what I was going to do for entertainment today! Thanks for the laughs.

mr. barton i want to apologize to you. there is a typo in my last post. it read "you were not done wrong in your arrest and trial". i meant to say YOU WERE DONE WRONG. sorry for the mistake and keep up the good work of keeping us informed on the goings on in our city government.

i will respond to you mr barton because i believe you are an intelligent man. i cannot give my name for fear of my job. surely, you can appreciate that. i completely agree that a person has the right to his or her opinion, but i also have to right to disagree. i, like you, am expressing my disagreement with mr. davis. to continuously call our great country, state or city a "police state" simply because we have laws and men and women to enforce those laws is dead wrong. again i ask the question, where would our country be if we did not have laws or law enforcement officers?

mr. barton i have friends that i disagree with on a variety of subjects also. such as religion, politics and some social issues. for example, i am totally opposed to abortion. it is the murder of an innocent baby. i believe the Bible literally from cover to cover. i believe that a man should earn what he gets, not handed out to him. and i believe that YOU were not done wrong in your arrest and trial. but that did not stop me from believing in our judicial system, our system of laws OR our police. because it wasn't a "police state" that did you wrong and it wasn't every police officer. this brings me to the conclusion that mr. davis is either trying to provoke a response from someone or he is a very misguided man.

NOW TO klgeorge ... to respond to you would be impossible because i would have to bring myself DOWN to your level and i can't do that. but i will say NO, you do not know who i am. most of the people i know have some degree of intelligence. you don't! your ramblings are quite humorus. at least the little bit that a reader can understand. most of what you write is a bunch of broken sentences, the rest is incoherent. are you really as stupid as you appear to be. klgeorge i will call you out on this one. you say you know who i am and you have my email address and you have some books that are mine. then write back and tell me and everyone else who i am, what my email address is and what books you have of mine. and the next time you see me at wal mart walk up to me and say hello.

Sic'nTired, The last time i saw you at the mental health center, you had a bag full of meds, and apparently you have came off of your meds, and your multiable personalitys are kicking in,I think you need to be evaluated. And Start back taking your meds.I wonder sense you say you are a city investagator, do you investagate what they have done, and realize it was you all the time? And stop bothering the childrens trycicles, you are to big for them. You will brake them down, with all the garbage you talk. I thought the city of Talladega did mental evaluations on their officers. And if so, how in the world did you slip through the cracks, So the next time i see you at Wal-Mart, I am going to have to go down a list of names just to find out which one of your personalities you are in, So i just guess i will have to just go down a long list till i get to the right one. I don't know Mr. Daryle Davis as far as i know, I am going to make it a point to meet this man, I don't beleive this man is as bad as you claim he is, I feel you have a personal grudge against him for some reason. A some of us may already know what that grudge is. It is like a pyramid scheme eventualy it will fall.

TO:Sic'nTired: I agree with you completely that you cannot paint all police officers with a broad brush..Darryl and I have had some heated comments about this...some so heated that you would think we were the worst of enemies. Darryl and I disagree on a lot of various subjects, including religious doctrine, politic and the economy...but we remain friends. I think what I admire the most about Darryl, is he is sincere and honest in his comments and dealings with the public, and is not ashamed or afraid to sign his name...when a person makes comments and refuses to give their right name, this speaks volumes to me...are they ashamed of who their family is? is there something in their past they are afraid will be talked about? I don't know. I hope citizens will continue to speak out, regardless of whether they sign their right name, but please be factual...and cite references when you say you know for a fact thus and such...Is this asking too much? Hve a great weekend.

mr. barton what was done to you was wrong. i agree the seat belt law is excessive. abortion is wrong and any kind of action that endangers a child is wrong. surely you see that the rank and file police officer has nothing to do with the passage of these laws. if you were mayor or if you were the chief of police and you had an officer that did not do his job by enforcing laws what would you do. would you commend him for turning his head when someone ran a stop sign, or was caught speeding. further, you were mayor for many years, you should know that the municipality gets very little of the money from the fines imposed on traffic violators. you should also know that the police officers job is to patrol the streets and enforce all laws.

you reference the Bible and our Saviour Jesus Christ. but doesn't that same Bible say to "render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasars and unto God that which is Gods"? i believe the writer was not talking just about money. i believe he also meant respect and obiendence to the law. what would our society be like if everyone had the same mentality as darryl davis. what would our society be like if we had no laws or no one to enforce the laws. we should take a lesson from the riots of the 60's and the anarchist demonstrating and rioting the streets now. God bless us, with his kind of thinking, WE NEED IT.

mr. barton i appreciate your comments. IF mr. davis talked only about the officers who were doing wrong it would be justifiable. he does NOT. he lumps all law enforcement officers in the same category. that would be like me lumping all tv repairmen and all mayors into one category. it is wrong !! there are good and bad in every profession and all should be dealt with accordingly.

the same Bible you talk about also says "render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's and to God that which is God". i don't think they were talking just about money. i believe the writer also meant, respect and obedience of the law.

mr. barton i want to see you elected as the next mayor, but trust me this man will bring you down.

no sir, i have never had a run in with the law. i have the utmost respect for law enforcement officers especially the ones in talladega. i am sure you are aware of the tremendous stress TPD officers are under with the manpower shortage. but the men and women show up everyday putting their life on the line, even for critics such as darryl davis. it is bad enough to be called all kind of names by the thugs, but to be degraded by an average citizen is disheartening.

TO:SIC'nTIRED: Just a note to say that I appreciate you taking time to make comments about the various articles that appear in the Daily Home. I may or may not know you by your real name, but not by your "handle". I think I was very clear when I commented about my friend Darryl Davis. He has a right to speak out on whatever he wishes,,,just like you and I and all the other folks...we still live in America and there is still a first amendment...at least for now...Do I agree with everything that Darryl writes about? Certainly not...just like there are folks who do not agree with me on many of my comments...once again...we still live in America...Whether Darryl has ever had a run in with the police or not...I don't know. I know he has his opinion about police officers who operate outside the law...and there are many...I keep articles of politicians, judges, lawyers, police officers and other type elected officials who are supposed to be enforcing and obeying the law..they did not and have been fired and many cases been indicted and served time...while I was at Eglin prison camp, there were three sheriff's, one prosecutor, many police officers, preachers, congressmen, dentists, medical doctors, professional football players and the list is endless...Just this week, there were four state troopers fired and now under investigation for wrong doing...so far, the investigation has been kept quiet...there is a judge in south alabama being tried for sexual misconduct with prisoners..several congressmen have been indicted and served time for breaking the law...while serving as mayor of Talladega for eleven years, there were several officers of the law who were disciplined and or fired for breaking the law..You talk about Darryl having his radio shut down because he did not have the proper license...how has this made the streets safer? We have state laws against Bingo/gambling...yet the various judges cannot decide whether it is legal or not...the governor says it is illegal, the attorney general says it is not...who do we believe? how is Bingo harmful to society for as safety is concerned? laws are passed that says you cannot smoke in certain areas because it is harmful to your health...yet it is O.K. to blow smoke in your baby's face at home or in the car...the baby has no recourse but to inhale..do we need laws that will lock up folks for blowing smoke into the babies lungs? It is O.K. for females to have an abortion at a licensed clinic, but if an individual kills her unborn without medical supervision, then it becomes murder...if you kill a turkey hen or an unanterled deer, you can go to jail,,but it is o.k. to kill your unborn...better not forget the seat belt...how is a person not wearing a seat belt making the streets safer? In some cities it is o.k. to smoke marijuana , but in other states, you can go to jail for ever. An eighteen year of age person can join the military, fight for our freedom, stop a bullet and even loose their life, but not old enough to smoke or drink...Judge Rochester's son was busted with an untold amount of so called illegal drugs,,,probation...most everyone else is sent off for ever..I was charged with a $5925.00 offense, sentenced to 51 months...guess this made the streets of Talladega safer..murderers, rapists etc don't receive this type sentence in many cases...While at Eglin, there were female officers busted for having sex with the inmates. Many of the federal officers were constantly swapping wives with each other. Will Darryl's obesssion with this corruption stop these type things from happening? Certainly.not...I guess I am a little confused about why you are taking such offense to Darrys's remarks...if you are not guilty or any of this type corruption or have not broken any laws, then he is not talking to or about you. I have always heard that "a bit dog hollers the loudest". I have talked with Darryl on numerous ocasions and he has repaired my t.v. set..However, his family or mine have never been out to eat, or to a social function, or church, but I would not be ashamed to be seen with him and his family at any of these events...I don't pick my friends just because I agree or disagree with them..I am not Jesus, and would never be worthy to even wash his feet if the opportunity were to present itself...but I cannot find in the Bible where Jesus shunned anyone because he did not like their belief or comments..it was the politicians, christians and officers of the courts/laws who mistreated him and hung him on a cross to die...If you have never met Darryl, other than on the computer, I would encourage you to set up a time when you could go visit him and the two of you talk about the various subjects...you will find that Darryl is a very intelligent individual, who reads and studies the Bible and any and all other books...I apologize for being so lengthy, and in closing, once again, let me thank you and everyone who enjoys addressing the issues, to continue to do so...but keep one thing in mind...NO ONE TELLS ME WHO MY FRIENDS ARE, and If I ever run again for anything, if I have to shun or stay from folks who might not be liked by others, then I will never be elected to anything again.God created everyone and as individuals, we will have to face God in death, not about what others think of us, but what God thinks, and that is all that really matters to me...Thanks for taking time to read my comments...Call Darryl and talk with him...one on one...

mr. davis you did not address the issues posed in my post either. are you mad at the police because you lost your little radio station? after all YOU were the one breaking the laws and rules that govern public broadcast facilities.

i could write a litany of babble full of plagiarism such as you did in your last post but i had rather stick to common sense thinking.

according to your thinking it is OK to molest and rape small children or exteminate your elderly parents when they become a hinderance, or just kill someone that disagrees with you. sir, it is people like you that are a danger to our society, NOT OUR LAWS.

THE POLICE KEEP THE PEACE, THEY DO NOT INVESTIGATE CITIZENS AND THEIR ACTIVITIES UNLESS THERE IS A REASON TO INVESTIGATE.

THE POLICE DO NOT INVESTIGATE CITIZENS ATTITUDES ONLY THEIR ACTIONS.

THE POLICE RESPOND TO EVIDENCE OF PLANNED AND ACTUAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

CITIZEN DISSENT IS LAWFUL AND THE POLICE DO NOT INVESTIGATE ATTITUDES TOWARD THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. that is something you should be thankful for.

and i again repeat what i said in my earlier post. mr. barton better distance himself from you if he wants to be the next mayor.

finally mr. davis, there was a slogan used a few years ago that simply said "America, love it or leave it". here's a thought, since we are such a "police state", why don't you move to cuba. fidel would love you.

after reading your latest tirade against the police i have come to the conclusion that you would think it permissable to molest and rape a small child, beat your elderly parents or better yet exterminate them when they become a nuisance. mr. davis let me remind you that:

THE POLICE RESPOND TO EVIDENCE OF PLANNED OR ACTUAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

THE POLICE KEEP THE PEACE, THEY DO NOT INVESTIGATE CITIZENS AND ACTIVITIES UNLESS THERE IS REASON TO DO SO.

THE POLICE DO NOT INVESTIGATE CITIZENS ATTITUDES TOWARD THE GOVERNMENT, ONLY THEIR ACTIVITES.

DISSENT IS LAWFUL AND THE POLICE DO NOT INVESTIGATE CITIZEN ATTITUDES TOWARD THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.

we can probably make this a better country by turning it over to the likes of barbra striesand, madonna, martin sheen, ed asner, jesse jackson, al sharpton, nancy pelosi, harry reid or perhaps, God help us, darryl davis.

am i pro-law enforcement? damn right i am. do i believe in my country and system of laws? damn right i do. do i agree with ALL the laws? no i don't, but as a citizen of this great country I am obligated the obey them and yes mr. davis as a police officer ( a title that I am proud of )i am sworn the enforce them. i don't purposely go out looking for people who are not wearing their seat belt, or running a stop sign.

i stand by my earlier post. you sir, are a pitiful fool, and mr. barton better distance himself from the likes of you if he wants to be the next mayor.

one other thing, there was a saying several years ago "America, love it or leave it", it applies to you. why don't you purchase a one way ticket to cuba and then see how you appreciate our "police state"?

To Sic n Tired , in reference to your comment below . You do not argue any of the facts that I laid out in my comment. Name calling " pitiful fool" and "idiot" are the charteristics of a third grader in elementary school. You disagree because you are involved in the practice I talk poorly about. This is a quote of law which you are supposed to be going by: The general rule is that an unconsitutional statute, though having the form and name of law, is in reality no law, but is wholly void, and ineffective for any purpose; since unconstitutionality dates from the time of its enactment, and not merely from the date of the decision so branding it. No one is bound to obey an unconstitutional law and no courts are bound to enforce it. 16 Am Jur 2d, Sec 177 late 2d Sec 256 The people have no rights only privleges , otherwise why would any one have to get a license to drive or marry, hunt , fish etc.??? The only right any one (in reality) has is the " right to remain silent". As far as me having a problem with authority goes; when did the police or the courts or congress have any rule or authority over me in the first place as I thought we lived in a free country? It is you that has the authority problem as it was you in your comment that issued Mr.Barton as ultimatum that if he did not discard me a a friend and " take a stand against me" that no one was going to support him. And finally in reference to "most people support law enforcement" . Step back and put yourself in another person shoes. You are going to work and you look in the rear view mirror and you see blue lights wanting you to pull over. Are you happy to see this? Is this something that causes you to jump for joy because he noticed you? No, it is a sinking feeling deep down in your gut as you know you will have to pay a considerable amount of your hard earned money and you can't even think of what you did to cause the police to pull you over. Being pulled over by police for stupid reasons to generate money is morally wrong in a free country. German style roadblocks are no different and are unconstitutional but will be continued because it creates revenue for the city and for the courts. Title 32 in Alabama says you must have a license to drive but doesn't that mean you are not free to travel?(I refer to the law listed above) If I am an idiot and a pitiful fool as per your comment because my viewpoint does not match yours then I guess that must be the case, after all you said it and it must be true. Read the U.S. Constitution and the Alabama Constitution and educate yourself. Again I say " WE ARE NOT FREE" Welcome to Amerika the Police State.

only darryl davis could take a story about the board of education purchasing school buses and turn it into a way to bash the police. i understand mr. davis you don't like the police. are you blaming the police for losing your little radio station? you should blame yourself because YOU were not following the laws that govern the operation of a broadcast outlet. mr. davis you have a serious problem with authority period. it is evident that you have had a run in with the law and you hate the police. you are a pitiful fool. IF larry barton intends to run for mayor, and i hope he does, he should distance himself from you. larry, a lot of people are already talking about supporting you, but NOT if you continue to defend this idiot. wake up larry and take a stand against this guy. MOST PEOPLE SUPPORT LAW ENFORCEMENT.

Actually the state was supposed to be researching whether seat belts would make buses safer, after the tragedy in Huntsville when a bus went over the side of an interstate overpass, resulting in several fatalities - which, by the way, was not a lateral rollover. I don't recall hearing anything from that project.

As to the possibility of a bus going underwater, yes that could happen. Lots of things could happen. Nothing will provide universal protection. Most kids are capable of unfastening a seat belt.

So much for pay as you go. The socialists and communists in Washington have been attacking the banking system for months now but we still give the banks and government millions and billions of dollars (for short term help) of our tax money because the idiots we elect or the idiots that get appointed to these boards can spend our money anytime for any reason without regard to the same kind of budgeting of income the average person has to do. Don't buy things unless you can afford them and stop making the banks richer for no reason. Early Christmas, yea, for those who will get kickbacks from this waste of taxpayer money.

LINCOLN CITIZEN , Did you acually read the comment below you? If you did you missed the point by about 10 miles. You put way too much confidence in your "childrens keepers". What is good for the goose should be good for the gander but that is not the case in this clicked up county. So why is it the Alabama State Troopers are not pulling over school buses and handing out individual tickets to each of the children for not wearing their seat belts? They financially rape everyone else on the side of the road and in the courtroom in this county. It's gotten so bad with all these stupid laws that you cannot get out of bed in the morning without breaking some law. The police might want to start considering their oath of office and stop enforcing these stupid laws. If an officer pulls over one of his friends 99% of the time the friend walks away with no ticket. Selective enforcment is the name of the game here also.We are in a full blown POLICE STATE and no one can even see it. How do some folks sleep??? LINCOLN CITIZEN do your homework. ( In a county where the paper says almost all entitys are spent broke , yet here is a major purchase of school buses), maybe someone is poor mouthing.

Did you know school bus seats are designed to hold a child in the seat except for a lateral roll over??? when is the last time you saw a Talladega County bus do a lateral roll???

As many little county road bridges over water that there are in Talladega county I dont want my child seat belted in a seat if one of those bridges give way and the bus goes in the water.

Thank you TCBOE for looking out for my children.

Do your home work before you make a statment.

Did you know:

Under the law, you can be ticketed if children in your vehicle aren't wearing their seat belt -

but the government's school buses are excluded from that law?

In fact, while school buses CAN be manufactured with seat belts, most systems specifically order them WITHOUT seat belts, so the children don't even have a choice about whether to buckle up.

I wonder which way these buses were ordered...

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Or not.
