Public needs more say in Pell City

We don’t doubt the motives are pure — to make things better for the city and its citizens.

But the lack of public discussion by Pell City Mayor Bill Hereford and the City Council on issues that clearly affect wide swaths of the population continues to be a disturbing trend.

The latest is the handing over of the city’s sports programs to parents while the actual department handles facility needs. It was a major step for sports activities, but barely a whimper was heard about it beforehand.

Now, those attending games at the city’s sports complex are being charged admission. The need for raising more money is evident. And the cons of such a move are starting to emerge.

Significant issues like a total change in policy and practice needed to be a public discussion in a public forum. It needed to be thoroughly examined, discussed, debated and then acted upon.

Instead, it simply became the practice.

Hereford and the council need to be more up front with the people of Pell City. It’s their city, too, and they deserve a say.
