First year head coach DeShon Burney is impressed with the way his players focus on football once three o’clock comes around.
“It’s been like any typical school that I have been where they are going to participate,” Burney said. “They have been good once three o’clock comes and we get on the field they have been focused on football. I have been pleased on how quickly they go from being regular students to coming out after school being football players and putting that stuff behind us.”
Burney is impressed with the leadership that he is beginning to see from his underclassmen.
“Practice has been good,” Burney said. “We have seen leadership from a lot of deferent class of players meaning that the younger kids are understand what we are trying to do. I am proud of the way that they have responded. The last couple of weeks have been successful and it shows that the hard work is paying off.”
The Fayetteville Wolves enter Friday’s game looking for their second win of the season. Burney believes that the Wolves are the most improved team that he has seen this year.
“Fayetteville is one of the most improved teams I have seen from week one to week seven,” Burney said. “That tailback that they have Traylor, that kid runs hard. They have shown steady improvement.”
The Fighting Tigers defense is beginning to get their swagger back. Last week TC Central’s defense only gave up 160 yards of total offense in their win over Verbena.
“We are starting to play with that TC swagger again on the defensive side,” Burney said. “The game is starting to slow down to them. We have made some personnel changes and we have asked a couple of young kids like Ramone Russell and Corey Morris to step up and start contributing a little more.
“Those kids have done everything that we have asked them to do and done it to the best of their ability.”
Offensively, quarterback Cameron Duncan has carried the load. The senior racked up over 300 all-purpose yards in their victory over Verbena.
With the poor field conditions, Burney believes that not turning the ball over and special teams play will determine who wins on Friday night.
“Taking care of the ball and special teams play is the main ingredient and with the field conditions being the way that they are this coming Friday it is going to be even more important,” Burney said.
“It is supposed to be wet the rest of the week and we should be used to playing in the rain. But I have never seen a field that saturated played on like that before. Footing is going to be a issue and just taking care of the ball.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday from Alumni Field in Howell’s Cove.
