HOWELL’S COVE - A year removed from not having a volleyball program, the Talladega County Central Lady Fighting Tigers find themselves getting ready to play in the AHSAA Class 1A Regional Tournament on the Fayette campus of Bevill State Community College on Saturday.

“We are very excited,” TC Central head coach Deborah Gover said. “I am very proud of the girls; I have some extraordinary athletes and when they pull together as a team they are good. I just really thank God that we have made it this far.”

Last season the Lady Fighting Tigers did not have a team due to the fact that they did not have a coach. When Gover was named the coach this season she inherited most of the players from the 2007 team.

“They played before, so they were anxious to play again,” Gover said. “So it was not that hard to get the team together because they were waiting for a team.”

Not having a team last season and having a new head coach were factors at the beginning of the season when TC Central started the season 0-7.

“We started off rocky,” junior Shanekia Taylor said. “We had to get to know each other; after we gelled we started working together and we started winning.”

The Lady Fighting Tigers began to peak at the end of the season as they won three out their last five matches. After losing two regular season matches to Victory Christian the Lady Fighting Tigers were able to beat the Lady Lions when it counted.

“It feels good,” Taylor said. “We beat Victory Christian; we played them two times before and we did not beat them so for us to beat them at the area tournament it feels good.”

The Lady Fighting Tigers received help from the Talladega College Lady Tornadoes volleyball team this season. Taylor believes that playing against the Lady Tornadoes was a good experience for the team.

“Their coach and their girls practiced with us,” Taylor said. ”It was a good experience, because it was really intense.”

Senior Ashley Lawson believes that the Lady Fighting Tigers will have success at the regional tournament.

“It is awesome,” Ashley Lawson said. “We are going to continue to go further.”

TC Central takes on Donoho on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the campus of Bevill State-Fayette.
