“We got behind the eight ball early in the season,” Lincoln head coach Chad Martin said. “We had a stretch where we were not playing good football and our kids have come on late trying win as much as we possibly can to put us in the best position as possible.”
The Golden Bear smash and dash attack of Rod Green and DJ Howard was too much for the Munford Lions to handle. The “Smash” Green rushed for 163 yards while the “Dash” Howard rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
Howard, who saw limited carries in the first half sparked a nine-play 71-yard drive for a touchdown. Howard had runs of 22 and 6 yards; Damon Collins capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Logan Brown’s extra point attempt was good to give the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead with 11:47 left in the first half.
“The first half we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers,” Martin said. “Our kids continued to fight back and the offensive line did great tonight. The backs ran hard and defensively we never allowed them to sustain drives. We knew coming in that we had to keep them off the field. Our defense played well and the offense was able to click. It was a night where we played good football as a whole entire team. “
Green carried the Golden Bears down the field on their next possession. The sophomore running back rushed for 54 of the 56 yards on the drive. He capped off the drive with a two yard touchdown. Brown’s extra point was good to make it 14-0.
After a Bradley Huard fumble the Golden Bears offense then turned to their Howard. After getting loose for a 21 yard run, Howard showed off his amazing speed going 63 yards for a touchdown to make it 20-0 with 2:38 left before halftime.
On the ensuing kickoff, Martel Montgomery delivered a bone jarring hit, which caused the Munford return man to fumble the football. The Golden Bears capitalized on the turnover three plays later when Collins took it in two plays later to make it 26-0.
“That was huge,” Martin said. “Those are things that we talk about, those small intangibles. If you are going full speed good things will happen.”
In the second half the Golden Bears picked up where they left off in the first half. On their first possession of the half they put together a five-play, 44-yard drive together for a touchdown. The Golden Bears turned to Green scored from 11 yards out to give them a 33-0 lead with 7:20 left in the third.
“In the locker room before we came out we said that we weren’t throwing any passes, it is just going to be ground game all night,” Green said. “So we came out and executed. We had a hard practice so we came out here and wanted to win to make it seven in a row.”
On the Golden Bears next possession Howard scored from 16 yards out to give the Golden Bears a 40-0 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter.
Green scored a late touchdown from 35 yards out to make it 47-0.
The Lions could not get anything going tonight against the Golden Bears. The only bright spot for the Lions on Thursday was a 74 yard kick off return by Michael Long to the Lincoln 21 yard line.
“They dominated every facet of the game,” Munford head coach Todd Smith said. “ They have a good ball team and we knew that. They jumped on us early and stayed on us.”
The Golden Bears travel to Clay County on Thursday for their regular season finale. Munford travels to face Oak Grove on Oct. 30.
