Cities like Sylacauga have long and interesting histories, and preserving that history is an important part of helping our communities retain their heritage and identity.

Most recently, a historic marker has been placed at the Marble City Cemetery in Sylacauga. The cemetery dates back to 1898 for public burials and at least 1876 as a private cemetery.

Sylacauga was one of the first cities in the state to become interested in cemetery preservation with the Alabama Historical Commission, and the marker indicates Marble City Cemetery was added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Registry this year by the commission.

The marker and the designation are the result of teamwork between the city and volunteers who worked to restore this historic landmark and meet all the state requirements.

We applaud everyone who helped preserve an important part of Sylacauga’s history for future generations.
