TALLADEGA — As the Talladega Superspeedway gears up for its big Hallow-Dega weekend, it’s giving priority to keeping the fans of all ages happy.

The speedway will keep Halloween weekend alive with numerous activities for fans from all over, some of whom have already started arriving. As the race coincides with Halloween this year, it has given the speedway extra opportunities to include a variety of fans.

“Over the years I think we’ve become known as the track that has a little bit of everything, and I think this weekend we’ll get to prove that again,” speedway president Rick Humphrey said.

Friday night is Race Fever. This is the speedway’s fundraising assisting event for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind. There will be driver and celebrity interviews, a silent auction of racing memorabilia, a live auction for a racing experience plus a barbecue feast.

Celebrities such as the Alabama Gang and the Lost Trailers will make appearances from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Race Fever will be from 5 to 9 p.m. in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame Speed Channel Dome. Tickets are $50 and can be ordered at 761-3317.

On Saturday, the speedway will launch fully into the Halloween spirit with a costume contest, a haunted maze, a hall of mirrors, scream contest, a fortune teller, a wax hands interactive display and other Halloween activities that are free to the public.

Saturday will also be a day of music. LoCash Cowboys, Blackberry Smoke, Colt Ford and Houston County will perform for the Hallow-Dega crowd. After the race the Zac Brown Band will take the stage in the infield. Those with speedway tickets will get to enjoy the band right where the races happen.

“This is the first time we’ve opened the infield to all ticket holders,” Humphrey said.

The Lost Trailers will sign copies of their CDs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hall of Fame.

The music will continue Sunday when former Alabama lead singer Randy Owen will perform “My Home’s in Alabama” during the pre-race ceremony. Humphrey said it was a treat to be able to book Owen for the race and hopes to do it again.

Of course, the main events of the weekend will be the Mountain Dew 250 truck race at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday’s AMP Energy 500 at noon. The races have already started drawing crowds.

“We opened the campgrounds on Tuesday and had a great turnout in spite of the weather. We’ll open the infield on Thursday, and the race cars will get in on Friday,” Humphrey said.

No matter when guests arrive, the activity lineup proves to offer plenty for families to do when not watching the cars run.

“Something we take pride in is that Talladega Superspeedway has something for everybody,” Humphrey said.
