HOWELL’S COVE - The Talladega County Central Fighting Tigers enter tonight’s game looking to upset the number four team in Class 1A Maplesville. TC Central head coach DeShon Burney thinks highly of the Maplesville football program. He believes that tonight’s game will be their biggest test of the season.

“Maplesville is the best team that we have played this year bar none,” Burney said. “I am talking about from all three phases of the ball game bar none. We have played some teams that have been a little bit bigger, a little older, a little bit better on offense, a little bit better on defense.

“I guarantee you when it comes to offense, defense and special teams, everything put together, they are the best team that we have faced. They are well coached, they are going to get at it playing that split four defense, they keep everything in front of them, they don’t miss tackles and they come out they are wide open on their offense.”

The last time the Fighting Tigers opened the playoffs on the road was in 2000 when they defeated Courtland 24-22.

TC Central enters tonight’s game looking to end their first two-game losing streak since 2005. The Fighting Tigers will depend heavily on senior Cameron Duncan to make some big plays with his arm and his legs. The dual-threat quarterback has over a 1,000 yards in both rushing and passing this season.

“We don’t want to lose three in a row.

“If you lose this one you are going home,” Duncan said. ”Most people won’t be playing football any more. They will be hanging up their pads for good.”

In last week’s loss against Childersburg the Fighting Tigers’ defensive miscues proved costly. Burney and the Fighting Tigers worked on preventing those breakdowns from happening this week during practice.

“We had one blown coverage, but when I go back and look at the film we had a lot of missed tackles and that led to it,” Burney said. “The technique was good, but we have to get our heads around and play the ball instead of the defender.

“When a quarterback gets that hot, I think he was 13-17 and you have the missed tackles like we had you are going to lose 34-21.

“The kids play hard and I am proud of that, but like I said before we are not big on moral victories around here.”

In the Fighting Tigers’ six victories this season they have scored early and played stingy defense. Burney believes if they can do those things they can leave Maplesville with a victory.

“What we are trying to do is win the series, get first downs, stop them and let the chips fall,” Burney said. “I love our chances.

“I think we match up well with them.

“It is just a matter of coming out fast and preventing the big play.

“They have big play potential just about at any skill position, but so do we. It is going to come down to who tackles better and I will take my chances.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
