TALLADEGA COUNTY — Twelve schools in the Talladega County School System will soon benefit from economic stimulus grants Gov. Bob Riley has awarded to cut energy costs.

Talladega County Board of Education Superintendent Suzanne Lacey found out Monday, and Riley’s office released information to the public Tuesday about the grant money.

Roughly 70 schools in 14 school systems statewide will be able to save energy and reduce their utility bills by upgrading equipment and making other improvements with the more than $4 million to be dispersed.

Of that approximately $4 million, Talladega County Schools should receive $765,237. This money will enable the system to install energy-efficient heating and air conditioning units, add insulation and upgrade the lighting in 12 area schools. This equipment will replace outdated heating, cooling and lighting systems.

“The school improvements funded by these grants will reduce each school’s energy consumption, and that saves taxpayers money,” Riley said. “This is a good investment both for our schools and our taxpayers.”

The schools in Talladega County set to receive upgrades with the stimulus money include B.B. Comer Elementary School, Childersburg Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Munford Elementary School, Stemley Road Elementary School, Sycamore Elementary School, A.H. Watwood Elementary School, Childersburg Middle School, Childersburg High School, Fayetteville High School, Talladega County Central High School and Winterboro High School.

Lacey said several people in the county system were instrumental in helping Talladega receive the grant money. She especially appreciates the work of Alex Stewart, energy manager for TCBOE, and Dr. Dan Payant, director of operations and support personnel for TCBOE.

“We are delighted to receive these funds,” Lacey said. “These are projects we might otherwise have not been able to do, and it was a necessity to save the system money. We definitely would have had to postpone these projects with proration this year. It is so critical when you can save money and help conserve.”

The other school systems receiving stimulus grants to become more energy efficient include Butler County, Chambers County, DeKalb County, Escambia County, Montgomery County, Piedmont, Roanoke, Russell County, Selma, Tarrant, Tuscaloosa, Walker County and Winston County.

Sorry Darryl, after reading my last post it sounds confusing. I do agree with your post about police being the strongarms for politicians. So far, I haven't had any reason to feel as strongly as some about the issue. However, that is exactly what police do, enforce the laws that our elected politicians write, no matter what we think of it.

Many years ago, my father got a ticket for parking his motorcycle on the sidewalk in Sylacauga. It was around 9pm. I had been riding his motorcycle for a few days prior and of course not driving like I should. I was still a teenager. I think the cops saw his bike, and thinking it was me, gave him a ticket for obstructing the sidewalk. He took the ticket to the chief and asked to see this law on the books. It took about 3 days before they found it. I didn't read it for myself, but he told me that the way the law reads, everything that blocks the walking path is illegal. So, he told the chief that when Coast to Coast stop parking lawn mowers on the siewalk, the business owners in the city of Sylacauga stopped having the sidewalk sales, and all of the trees, benches, and trash receptacles were removed from the sidewalks, he would gladly pay the fine. They dropped the ticket. Then he came home and asked me why the cops were looking for his motorcycle. I still plea the 5th on that one!

Darryl, I completely agree with you. I don't have a problem with most police and other agencies. For the most part, they are needed and serve a great purpose. It is unfortunate that some of the people in these positions give the others a bad name.

Hey biblethumper, I didn't say anything was wrong with voting for OBAMA. I was implying that he is another standard politician that will lie about anything to get what he wants. Has he kept his campaign promises? Is he keeping his word about cutting costs and spending? No. I am sorry to say that politics is a game of leading sheep, in my opinion, much like religion.

Question Needing Answer please:

If "Twelve schools in the Talladega County School System will soon benefit from economic stimulus grants Gov. Bob Riley has awarded to cut energy costs."

Where did Bob Riley get the money to begin with??

Serious, truthful answers only please. No mean spirited ones, okay.

Thanks

That's what I thought you were getting at, Larry.

It will be interesting to see which ones ask for a bow at election time, now that you mention it. I think the traffic light you guys speak of is a good example of how screwed up the whole political game really is. This is exactly why I have no faith in our system. It is all about the "picture" they want to sell you, not about the picture you want to buy. Even what they try to sell is a lie. You just don't know until you get it unwrapped. How about peeps that voted for OBAMA, you know what I'm talking about.

Gentlemen, please!

Forgive me for asking this: what's next, seeing who can most efficiently write his name in the snow??

Now, back to the issue at hand: I reside in Munford. LarryBarton is exactly correct when he says every (and I stress every) politician within a 25 mile radius (perhaps more) had to POSE with that stupid traffic light. I expected the Pope (or his representative from Vatican) to be flown in by a grant $$ from one of these elected geeks: to christen the light while it was held lovingly in the arms of each politician - with obligatory photo taken and circulated in the media of course.

TAlk about tooting one own horn. When election time rolls around they will all have photo taken with the new water well in Munford. Hey, maybe the Pope can come in for that one: Can get a better deal on the holy water!!!!!

With the local/state dweebs we have in office....

GOD BLESS AMERICA - GOD HELP US ALL.

Can somebody please tell me what is wrong with 280 in Sylacauga? The highway is one screwed up road. I have never seen it take this long to repave a road. My gosh every time you cross over 280 it just about knocks your car out of line. I never see anyone working on the highway. I can't be only one frustrated with it. I guess they have ran out of that good old stimulas money. Something needs to be done or someone needs to be fired. What a joke!!!

Well said Larry Barton! Hey, here's my take on the whole thing : I believe the articles states money used to install energency efficient heating/cooling units, etc. Well, my view is : someone will have a friend or go to church with the winner of the bidding process. I smell greased palms....

Take care everyone. (Gee, some of the posters on this board sound pretty mean)...

That was a little harsh, Frank.

Larry, what is wrong with someone that was involved taking credit? This would be exactly what we would want and expect from an elected official. Are you thinking that they all will probably want to take credit for it whether they actually had anything to do with it or not?

I may have lost my faith in our political system, tallchick49. Honest and politics don't really seem to go together, anymore.

My, my, Frank. You certainly are full of pst and vinegar this morning! You are just so ready to tear into Larry Barton about his past--which he has not tried to hide from anyone. And, you even gave his number and how many months he served in prison. Hmmm...seems to me that means he paid his debt to society for the crime he admitted doing. Paid in full. Sort of takes the sting out of your tirade, doesn't it?!

And as for Larry running for office again, do me the big, big favor of not casting my vote for me. I'll do that for myself, thanks. And I just might vote for an honest man. It'd be a nice change from the arrogant, obviously and admittedly ignorant council and mayor we have now.

And as for Larry's 'lame' TV show--what have you done to help the community, Frank? Besides sitting in your Laz-E-Boy, drinking a brew and screaming at the wife and kids while you watch some 'lame' football game, I mean.

At least Larry is trying to find solutions instead of creating the problems.

Ya got my vote, Larry!! Keep up the good work!

Hey Larry Barton....shut the crap up already. You are the last one who should be critiquing ANYONE. Have you forgotten you were once Federal Inmate #56737? By the way, look that number up on your phone...it spells LOSER!

Oh, of course you were set up and that's why you were sentenced to FEDERAL PRISON for 51 months. But you didn't do it....right?

It seems you gripe about elected officials in the spotlight all of the time, yet you are the one prostituting yourself and your extremely lame tv show that all 48 people get on their cable network. Are you going to make a run at the office of Mayor of Talladega......A-G-A-I-N? Haven't you gotten the hint that not even the voters of Talladega want you?

Oh and didn't you also lose a race against Prueitt in the senate? How many political races have you lost? You are a career politician who is having a hard time making a career out of it!

Go grind some stumps somewhere and when you're done with that go crawl under a rock and disappear.....forever!
