Deon Long, 38, was shot and killed at his residence on Pleasant Hill Lane in the Odena community. Responders from the Sheriff’s Department found Long dead when they arrived around 11 p.m.
Chief Deputy Jimmy Kilgore confirmed it is a homicide investigation. No arrests had been made regarding the incident by Thursday evening.
One of Long’s neighbors, Roy Heard, said Long had been living at the residence for around two years. Heard said he and his wife awoke after hearing gunshots around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Heard said hearing shots fired was common in the neighborhood.
“They shoot all the time around here, nobody thinks anything else about it,” he said. “[My wife] said two cars came out and didn’t even stop, they just shot on out to the road. She was in the window, I wasn’t. She couldn’t describe the cars though, it was too dark.”
Heard said he and Long used to ride motorcycles together. He added that he did not know Long well but he had “seemed like a really nice guy.”
Heard said he recalled hearing four or five gunshots in all.
Capt. Mike Hubbard said investigators had spoken with 15-20 people, both witnesses and persons of interest.
Hubbard said on Wednesday investigators were also looking for a vehicle owned by Long that was taken, a 2001 grey Lincoln LS. He said the car had a Barber Motorsports tag.
Kilgore said investigators are continuing to follow up on leads.
“Several [people] have been questioned but nothing has led us to the point of taking someone into custody,” he said.
