More than 500 people stood in line on a cold, drizzly day in Sylacauga Tuesday for a Christmas basket full of food for them and their families for the holiday.

Organizers of the Christmas Basket program say it was the most ever to be served in the project’s 20-year history, underscoring just how dire the times are right now. The need in Sylacauga is evident, just as it is in communities across the region.

But volunteers, donors and programs like these are making a difference, easing an otherwise painful situation.

We salute the efforts of Sylacauga’s Christmas Basket program and the people who make it happen. Their work to provide baskets to those in need is yet another inspirational story of giving this holiday season.
