Area law enforcement agencies will hit the roads and highways this holiday period, looking for DUI and unsafe drivers.

“We are doing extra check points and we’ll have more officers on patrol,” said Lt. Fremon Edwards with the Sylacauga Police Department. “Even some of our investigators try to help us do extra patrols during the holidays.”

Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley echoed Edwards’ warning, if you drink, don’t drive.

“Enjoy the Holidays at home,” Turley said. “Don’t take it on the road.”

Turley said if you are celebrating Christmas or the New Years away from home have a designated driver who is not drinking alcohol.

Turley said during the Christmas Holiday period, the Pell City Police Department will focus its attention in the business and residential areas for thefts, but will be out during the New Year’s Day Holiday period, looking for unsafe and DUI drivers.

“We have an overtime grant,” he said.

Turley said the Pell City Police Department will also set up safety check points during the holiday period.

“We have an overtime grant,” Turley said.

Talladega City Police Chief Alan Watson said they are waiting for Click it or Ticket grant money from the state, which will determine the type traffic safety checks the police department will do during the Christmas and New Year’s Day Holiday season.

“It will depend on the Click it or Ticket money,” Watson said. “But, we’ll have extra patrols regardless.”

Watson said if people drink, they need to stay away from behind the steering wheel.

He said the Talladega City Police Department will increase patrols targeting DUI and unsafe drivers during the Christmas and New Years Holiday periods.

Alabama State Troopers will also be out in full-force during both the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Public Safety Director Col. J. Christopher Murphy said traffic safety agencies throughout Alabama will aggressively work to curtail impaired driving during the holidays.

“If holiday celebrations include alcohol, I strongly advocate designating a non-drinking driver, taking advantage of transportation options available in your area, or making other plans,” Murphy said.

He said Troopers will utilize a fleet of BAT mobiles, nine trucks equipped with breath alcohol testing equipment at checkpoints.

He also said the use of seat belts and child restraints is often the best defense in the event of an alcohol-related crash.

Murphy said trooper-reported traffic deaths in Alabama have declined for three consecutive years.

He said year-to-date trooper-reported traffic fatalities reflect 103 fewer people killed, when compared to the same period in 2008 (510 verses 613).

The 78-hour Christmas travel period begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, and ends at midnight Sunday, Dec. 27.

In 2008, eight people, including one pedestrian and one motorcyclist, died in traffic crashes on Alabama roadways during the 102-hour Christmas period. Alcohol was a factor in at least three of the deaths, and four of the six vehicle occupants killed were not using seat belts.

The 78-hour New Year’s travel period extends from 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, through

The old time police officers had respect for the citizens. Now,they let the REAL crime go by unnoticed. When is the last time you read anything about the pell city officer shooting an un armed man to death in shadydale MHP? They cover thier rear ends, and make the citizens afraid to drive after one beer at a local tavern. Why? MONEY! MADD has control of the courts, and judges.Just once, call for assistance.see if they dont treat YOU like a criminal! This little town of pell city is becoming so corrupt, only the people who have lived here long enough remeber the days of the police chief having his brother in law run the only bar in town.well, folks, the mayor, police cheif, and all the way down to the garbage collectors are reaping the benefits.water bills here run higher than ANY other suburb of bhm.why? they have been putting it in their pockets.your choice.vote the council and mayor out,or move !

BGSchneider - meant no harm, was remembering things I went through. Still love reading your comments. You are correct on all of your statements, I was there when some of these things happened.

To Charles01, The first thing I would like to say is you should get a good dictionary so that you will know what the words you use mean:

dude  /dud, dyud/ [dood, dyood] Show IPA noun, verb, dud⋅ed, dud⋅ing.

–noun 1. a man excessively concerned with his clothes, grooming, and manners.

This is not priority one with me but you do not know me , only my words. How is it that if I do not share your opinion of the police that you would say this? ..........Your paranoid, schizophrenic behavior is not healthy. Have you given any consideration that it might be you that is suffering from this disorder instead of me?? I however do not suffer from the Psyco-therapy that these little ticket dispensers deal out daily on Ceaser's roads. This same practice is used to train dogs to fetch , sit and roll over with the only difference being the dogs get a treat but humans get punished(behaviour modification). Ticket dispensing has caused no one to change their behaviour in driving but only generated income for the agencies that recieve those ill gotten revenues. I am not afraid of the police as those are your words not mine. Because I have my eyes open and can see does that make me the monster that you pervey me to be?? Maybe in your eyes and a couple of others. Go back to sleep. Baaa Baaa Baaa Baaa Start counting...................

i do have proof of my accusation but who you going to tell because they cover for each other. One was on TV the other night singing and was drunk. My daughter & friends seen one coming out of a gas station buying beer on a sunday so what do you do. what i'm saying is that they need to start cleaning up their officers and give them tickets or haul them to jail like they do everyone else and show them how much it cost to pay for all of that. I know some of the officers well here in sylacauga and we do have some good apples as charles01 calls it but i know of 2 that should not be there. this one officer came after my nephew when he was off duty and was drunk my nephew did ask for help from on duty officers but of course they didnt arrest him they drove him home but if it would have been my nephew that was drunk they would of got him for a DUI.plus the off duty officer had small kids in the vehicle with him. So i do know my facts. If you mess with them then they will start pulling you over for stupid stuff and cause you more trouble. I understand that officer do see a lot on the streets but dont mean we the citizen should walk around on pins and needle for them. that is the life style they choice...

Darryldavis, I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I was in Law Enforecment, try looking at their side the drunk they arrest my be the one that could have killed you or your family. Do you Sir, know what it is like to arrive on the scene of an accident where there are bodies are everywhere. Do you know what it is like to have to find pieces of a person that was hit by a speading car. Do you know what its like to see a child that been killed in a car wreck. All you want to do is go home and hold your child and not let go. Please stop and think everyone bad mouths the police until they need them. But remember when they go home and take off the badge and gun, they still go over and over what they have seen that shift. True there are bad ones but those won't be there long

"Quote:

I wonder if the driver of what appears to be a Ford SUV knows that while the ticket dispenser(policy enforcer) is at the driver's window asking for fill in the blank information to write in for the accusation, that there is another ticket dispenser with his right hand on ready next to that weapon on his belt? What do these guys say to someone these days when it takes everything a man can earn just to stay on the road in a car, to have these little guys come up from behind and do what is pictured above? Most folks are so intimidated by the show of power (black uniform, gun in plain site, bullets, handcuffs, and radio for backup in case the vicim does not cooperate) that they will accually thank the officer for giving them a ticket. Police pulling folks over and handing out tickets has never caused folks to slow down or stop drinking and driving. I felt safer in the 70's and 80' with the beer drinkers on the road than with these guys on the road. This is not protect and serve but mere revenue generation. With all the breaking and entering and armed robbery that I read about in this paper ,where do these guys get the time to hold up some one on the side of the road in the first place?"

It's time you get some help dude. Your paranoid, schizophrenic behavior is not healthy. A little confession might just be the thing you need. Just how many times have you been arrested? And just so you know a traffic ticket is a "arrest". Your hatred of the police just didn't spring out of the woodwork, (which is personally a place I think you need to crawl back into) So come on Darryll, inquiring minds want to know! Why are you so afraid of the police?

It takes a lot of apples to make a pie, and even being so careful, there is a chance that one small piece of bad apple might make it into that pie. Now here's the difference between me and you. I'm gonna get rid of the bad piece, and enjoy the rest of the pie. You, on the other hand will throw the whole pie away, and sit back and complain that you have no pie to eat.

And as simple as that analogy is, I am quite confident that it will go right over your head.

Oh, by the way, my son in law is in training to become a certified police officer, so I do have a dog in the hunt!!!!

i was refering to the way darryl davis paints all police officers as the bad guys or what he calls them "government policy enforcers"if you have proof of your accusation then you should say something, but otherwise shutup.i'm sure a majority of officers are great guys and there are bad apples where ever you work, but don't say they are doing bad stuff all the time.

"the police do not act on their own they have job to do like everybody else".I agree that they have a job to do but do it equal. When a off duty officer is driving drunk arrest him for DUI dont let him go because he could kill someone like any other citizen could. So your comment said they do not act on their own is a lie because the do let who they want go. Officers do let other officers break the law and nothing is said or reported. They pay no fine or anything else. I seen couple of off duty officers drunk at public place having dinner but they wasnt worry about getting behind the wheel and getting a DUI. I know another officer hitting his wife but you know they can get away with it all. So you tell me how can they do that and nothing be done about it????

I am proud to live in a country where we can still express our opinions, whether we agree or not. I would hate to live in a society without good, honest law enforcement officers. Look at what is going on around us and the country even with our strong laws. Yes, there are "bogus" police officers, but can you imagine what it would be like with no one there to protect and serve? No, I detest some of the laws the inept, headline seeking politicians, get passed most time just before election. Keep in mind that it is the politicians who pass these laws...not the police. Law enforcement is just plain common sense in most cases...as a former police officer, I recognize that there are those who act stupid sometimes and create a problem for themself when confronted by an officer. Through the years, I have been stopped a couple of times for speeding...I was guilty both times and paid my fine...The officers in both cases could not have been more professional..I have shared in the past while serving as Mayor, I always had a fear of pinning a badge and giving a gun to a "trigger happy person". During my eleven years as Mayor, there was never an incident where the officer had to fire his weapon...they always acted professional and was able to profect the arrest without bodily harm...unfortuantely, this is not always the case. Finally, lets remember, there are a lot of folks who love their city/county and the USA and they fear of what the future holds. There are a lot of bad things going on in society and in politics. God gave us two ears and one mouth...maybe if we all (that includes me) would listen to what each one says and writes, twice as much, instead of castigating someone because we do not agree, we might just learn something. When someone posts comments that offend or that we question the validity of the material, ask the writer to prove their comments. Is this asking too much? Thanks to all who have stood with me and thanks to all who speak out and MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. Thank you Daily Home for providing this space for those who wish to express their comments and views.

SoSad - you are right. As I posted on another thread; Mr. Barton got caught and did his time. It is time for the nay-sayers to back off; he is trying to do good for the community.

At the same time, if you are still a licensed police officer, would you please arrest Skip Smithwick? I understand his family is decorating his home in orange this season; they hope this will get him ready for the jump-suit he will more than likely be wearing next year.

I tune into Larry's show from time to time; since I do not live in the immediate area, I watch it over the Internet. One of the funniest things he ever said was, if Smithwick wanted, he would be glad to tell him exactly what he could and could not take when he is put into prison.

Keep it up Mr. Barton!

Sincerely,

Bosley Alderman

only1greenag, Thanks for your comment. You asked this question below. : "How would you approach this financial crisis and still enforce the law without hurting citizens any further financially who are struggling already? I am not trying to put you on the spot as I enjoy your comments".

This is my responce. If there is no victim then there is no crime. For a police officer to set up a roadblock and search your "papers" to see if they are in order wreaks of Berlin, Germany. Costing an individual 200 plus dollars for the silliest of moving vehicle accusations is downright wrong and we are taught as children not to do others wrong but this lesson is tossed out when we become older. We are being micro managed by the police on the highway and if anyone thinks that they are going to ride on Ceaser's roads without paying Ceaser any tribute they better think twice.Click it or Ticket and Taking back our Streets and the silly little articles that warn the sheeple that they better behave or they are going to get a spanking also wreaks of the same psycology that is used to train dogs to sit , roll over or fetch. The police are infringing on people's rights when they charge them with going 5 mph over the limit or going thru a yellow light or other questionable accusations. This however is profitable for municipalitys and all the commenting in the world will not change the behaviour of the police. If the same mentallity continues we all will get to relive what has happened in many cultures before us. It just seems that we would learn from our past history but that is not the case.

Worked for Talladega Police Dept when Larry Barton was Mayor. There are two things you can always count on. Police Officers earn every dime they make, but people have no idea how much Politics dominate their duties. Larry Barton has paid the price for something he may or may not have done. You can like him or not, but he has always been a fair man to me. Larry Barton is trying to help this community, he must have hit a nerve with you, thats your American right

Mr. Davis,

I can't help but enjoy reading your comments. I admit though not as extreme as yours I do agree (to a certain degree) with most of your view points. However with what little education I have received I am stuck (BA Criminology) without a idea as to how to change our system anymore than the next person. Remember it is still considered (although broken) one of the best in the world. One thing is for certain we do need law enforcement. However I agree history is inclined to repeat itself and I do wonder how far we have already traveled down the road you speak. My biggest fear is debtor's prison. It is next I warn people but they won't listen. That is what alot of our original colonists of this country were from. England sent her criminals and convicts to start this country. Alot of them were shipped straight out of the Queen's prison's onto our soil because of their inability to live a life of productivity suitable to the Queen's standards. Our jobs, homes, and moral are slowing being (now rapidly) taken from us citizens. Let's remember though the officer's are humans just like us. Most know they to are subject to one day being incarcerated in our future prisons if they do not do as told and pay their bills. I would like to one day become a police officer. However, the type of officer mentality I have is called "community policing" and thus I am more prone to want to serve the public not terrorize, fine, and demoralize the public. As a result I am still having to come to terms with my conscience and thus far can't see myself writing a ticket for a "no left turn" costing a person their light bill. If I could be allowed to send the violators over to REEF to do volunteer work maybe then we would need less patrol officers to patrol our streets. As I am sure no one wants to go there LOL. Or would you allow me to order the offender to do pushups right their on the roadway? So if you were a police officer (mind you pretend no other job around to take) How would you approach this financial crisis and still enforce the law without hurting citizens any further financially who are struggling already? I am not trying to put you on the spot as I enjoy your comments. Like you though I am frustrated as alot of our CJ personnel are who work within the system. In a better attempt to understand the CJ system I have to look at both the macro and micro side and would love to hear from people whom have viewpoints similiar to yours.

At this present time I would trade a hundred Sam Wright's that don't care about Christmas dinner or the people that will have to leave Sylacauga to have one with the God awful smell. For one Larry Barton, who happens to care about us. I have met Mr Barton personally. He doesn't stick his nose up like others do. He is warm and caring about the well being of his fellow citizens. I knew about his past and the conviction that he received. But that's probably what has made him a better person and more caring. If Sam Wright had a nice conviction then maybe he would understand that he's just a man subjectable to the cares of the people.

I met Sunday School Teacher Sam Wright in Piggly Wiggly last night. He would not even acknowledge that we were even standing next to him. He spoke to no one. If it had started raining he would have drowned with his nostrils pointing skyward. On the other hand, I met Mr. Barton, my family and I received a warm greeting. So before any one shoots down Mr Barton's character talk with Sam and compare them. Sam will litigate you, and Larry will talk. I choose Larry.

Thank you, Merry Christmas, and God Bless

Saftey check point is a pleasant way of saying "Reveune generating road blocks" . Hitler had the same thing going on in Germany during his tenure as the "Furor" and his men would ask at the road blocks " Your papers please " .People that do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. Maybe Santa Claus will bring these guys a bag of coal.
