Mayor Sam Wright says there are a couple of construction projects the city will soon be ready to move on, and he hopes the projects will generate some money for local companies.
The first project will be bid out on Jan 22 for renovation of the court office at Sylacauga Municipal Complex.
“That will come out of our correctional fund,” Wright said. “The renovation will give them some extra room and storage, and I think they want to add a little area for the prosecutors to get together.”
The correctional fund receives its funding through fines levied by the court system, Wright said.
In February the city will bid out a sidewalk project to run from the old East Highland property to Alabama 21. This project is being funded through federal stimulus money.
“The (city) council approved the timeline to put the project out for bid in February and for the work to be done in April and May,” Wright said.
The project will replace old sidewalk and add some new sidewalk area. Wright said, “If we have the money, we may be able put in some handicap ramps in the project as well.”
Besides improving the sidewalks, Wright believes the project will add to the aesthetic appeal of the area.
“We hope it will generate some money in our community, and we hope some local people will be able to do it, but we don’t have much leeway over how that is done,” Wright said.
City leaders are considering how to utilize the rest of the East Highland property.
